Star Trek fans hungry for details on the upcoming Star Trek Into Darkness from J. J. Abrams just got served another trailer today, only in this spot, the star is not the manipulative villain played by Benedict Cumberbatch but a yet-to-be-announced Windows 8 laptop from Acer.

Acer has already sent out invites to the media for an event on May 3 in New York City to “demonstrate [its] vision for what touch-enabled computing can be featuring the launch of all-new Acer products.” While we are not entirely sure what Acer has cooked up for us, we expect to see some new Windows 8 devices from the Taiwanese company, including this one that showed up in the Star Trek Into Darkness teaser.

In this 30-second trailer, shots of the mysterious and supposedly revolutionary Acer laptop are interspersed with action sequences of the Federation Starship USS Enterprise as it speeds through space and gets beat up in the second-installment of the rebooted Star Trek franchise. The Acer laptop basically doubles as the Starfleet flagship in the clip, where its curvy body is supposed to evoke the ship’s iconic design and its back corners doubling as the thrusters (though not successfully according to this Trekkie).

Even though Acer is using this cross-promotion opportunity to show “a glimpse of a new Acer notebook that approaches touch and type in a new way,” we really didn’t see the Enterprise-sque Acer laptop flex its computing muscles beyond showing off a new hinge design that likely helps morph the laptop into a tablet. Perhaps its ExploreBeyondLimits site will offer more hints, but the devices we can see online look like standard laptops rather than Star Trek paraphernalia (boo).

With May 3 coming up at warp speed, we’ll just wait till then to find out more about Acer’s Windows 8 lineup reboot. Star Trek fans looking to see how Captain Kirk and Spock will survive Star Trek Into Darkness will have to wait until May 17.

Best external hard drive deals: Portable SSDs, game drives & more
A man uses a WD My Passport external hard drive alongside his laptop.

Even though there are a ton of cloud storage services online, it's still always a good idea to store your data locally, especially if it's important. While Google Drive or One Drive can be great, you never know if you're going to lose access to the internet at the most inopportune moment, so having external hard drive storage can be really useful. That's also true if you snag yourself one of these laptop deals and feel that the internal storage isn't really cutting it for the stuff you need to do. Even some of the best phones suffer from this problem of lack of storage, especially with how big some files are these days. On the bright side, you don't need the best external hard drives to have something good, and there are a lot of great deals that will help bring that down considerably.

That's why we've collected some of our favorite external hard drive deals below, although if you aren't too keen on lugging around an external hard drive, there are a lot of solid internal SSD deals you can check out. Also, if you have a PS5, then you may consider expanding that storage too with these PS5 SSD deals.

Google Search has a new way of preserving internet history
Google logo at the company's campus in California.

After retiring cached results at the start of the year, Google is now, as reported by The Verge, adding embedded Internet Archive links to search results so we can still view older versions of websites.

You'll find the new Wayback Machine links right where the cached links used to be by clicking the three dots next to a link in the results and selecting "More about this page." The option to "See previous versions on Internet Archive" should be at the bottom of the page. Changes to the search engine can take a while to consistently show up for everyone, so keep checking back if you can't see it yet.
