ATI Releases New High-End Graphics Cards

The RADEON X800, X800 XL and X850 Series visual processors originally debuted in December for PCI Express based systems. PCI Express is rapidly replacing AGP in new PC’s as the primary interconnecttechnology between the main processor and the graphics subsystem. These new AGP variants will allow users who have not yet upgraded to PCI Express to experience the same great performance and imagequality.

“The RADEON X800 XL and RADEON X850 products are perfect for gamers looking to upgrade their AGP systems to play the latest games,” said Rich Heye, Vice President and GM, Desktop Discrete Products, ATI Technologies Inc. “ATI will continue to deliver leading-edge graphics solutions like these for AGP as well as PCI Express to support the large install base.”

The RADEON X850 is a native AGP visual processor family featuring the RADEON X850 XT and other models. The RADEON X800 XL uses ATI’s PCI Express to AGP Bridge chip, which allows PCI Express graphics processors to be used in AGP-based computers. RADEON X800 XL and RADEON X850 AGP products from ATI and ATI board partners are available through a variety of retail and e-tail outlets as well as through OEMs and system builders.

AMD bolsters Navi with new $279 RX 5600 XT graphics card at CES 2020
amd radeon rx 5600 xt ces 2020

AMD's mid-range division of its Navi graphics card line has some new reinforcements. Following the debut of the entry-level RX 5500 XT in December 2019, AMD has now unveiled its RX 5600 XT, which the company is heralding as the ultimate 1080p gaming card. Although a welcome addition to the lineup, this debut was far from surprising, as multiple leaks over the preceding weeks told us almost everything to expect from the new card.

Although we don't have third-party benchmarks to give us a true idea of what this new card is capable of, by the numbers at least the 5600 XT slots neatly into the existing lineup of 5000-series GPUs -- just between the 5700 and 5500 XT. Although its core and clocks are very near that of the 5700 (especially if you factor in overclocking from third-party manufacturers and gamers) the memory configuration is distinctly different.

AMD Radeon RX 5700 and 5700 XT review

Gigabyte's latest GPU filing with the Eurasian Economic Commission (ECC) has let slip about an AMD Radeon graphics card that will further flesh out the RX 5000 series. Known as the RX 5600 XT, the GPU will sit between the existing RX 5700 and 5500 XT models, offering 6GB of GDDR6. We wouldn't be surprised if this card gets an official unveiling at CES in January 2020.

AMD's Navi graphics line launched in July 2019 with the RX 5700 and 5700 XT, debuting alongside the new Ryzen 3000 processors to much acclaim. Their new RDNA architecture on a TSMC 7nm process allowed for greater performance and efficiency than past generations, and made them competitive with Nvidia's new Super RTX cards. The RX 5500 debuted in December and provided solid competition for Nvidia's entry-level 16 series GPUs like the 1650 Super. The RX 5600 XT should compete with the likes of the GTX 1660 Super and 1660 Ti, replacing AMD's Vega 56 in the product stack.

AMD has finally expanded its RX 5000-series graphics cards outside of the RX 5700 and 5700 XT. The new 5500 XT is an entry-level graphics card designed to replace the aging Polaris GPUs like the RX 580 and 590. It claims to offer enough performance to pull ahead of even the Nvidia GTX 1650 Super, though aggressive pricing from the Green Team could make it a difficult choice between the two platforms.

Since the debut of the first RDNA-based, Navi graphics cards from AMD in July 2019, we've been clamoring for a more expansive lineup. The RX 5700 and 5700 XT are great competition for the RTX 2060 Super and RTX 2070, but what about the rest of the lineup? While we await a "Big Navi" to take the fight to the high-end RTX 2080 and above graphics cards in 2020, AMD has finally released something more contemporary than its still-competitive, but aged RX 500 Polaris GPUs.
