Iomega Skin Hard Drives: 500 GB and Hipster Designs

Tired of hard drives that look like escapees from bad sci-fi movies or abstract art seminars? Storage company Iomega is looking to bust out of the boring with its new Skin portable hard drives featuring three unique hipster designs from sports fashion brand Skin Industries.

“The new Iomega Skin Drives exude an alternative personality with eye-catching Skin Industries graphics that demand the attention of anyone who doesn’t accept the status quo, who zigs when others zag, especially when it comes to the look and design of their digital devices,” said Iomega president Jonathan Huberman, in a statement.

As drives, the Skin line are rather ho-hum, offering USB 2.0 interfaces, a respectable 500 GB capacity—they’re bus-powered, so users won’t need to carry around a separate power adapter to get to their content. The drives weigh just over one third of a pound, and measure 4.9 inches by 3.3 inches, and less than three quarters of an inch tall. The drives feature Iomega’s Drop Guard technology that helps protect the drives from falls of up to 51 inches (onto industrial carpet), and ship with EMC Retrospect Express and Iomega QuickProtect backup, as well as 2GB of online backup at MozyHome (unlimited storage is available for $4.95 a month).

The new Skin portable hard drives are available today at U.S. retailers, with a suggested price of $119.99.

Without cleaning your hard drive, HDDs will ultimately turn your machine into a shadow of its former self — opening programs is now a tedious and drawn-out process, performing simple tasks takes longer than usual, and nothing operates as efficiently as it once did. Before you know it, your PC’s hard drive has reached a state where you have no option but to rely on external hard drives to store files on.

How to partition a hard drive

Partitioning your hard drive is a great way to organize your files, folders, and applications into multiple virtual drives. Although there are advantages to having multiple physical drives, the rise in multi-terabyte hard drives has changed the game. Partitioning a single drive is a viable method to give your system that multi-drive functionality, with plenty of space on each, without shelling out for a second drive.
