Nvidia Unveils New Mobile, Desktop Graphics

Graphics developer Nvidia wants to push your pixels around, and to that end is has introduced two new graphics controllers to help your computers and games look and perform their best. The new Quadro FX 3600M for notebooks aims at the mobile professional market, while the company is kicking off its GeForce 9 series with its new super-fast GeForce 9600 GT for desktop systems.

First up, the Quadro FX 3600M takes over the high end of Nvidia’s Quadro line for notebook computers, and aims at engineers, designers, and scientists looking for workstation-class graphics on a notebook system. The Quadro FX 3600M features 512 MB of video RAM on a 256-bit memory interface, support for OpenGL 2.1, Shader Model 4, and DirectX 10, and the ability to push up to 51.2 GBps over its bus. The system also features PowerMizer adaptive power management tools that help extend battery life. The unit should turn up in notebook systems from Compaq, Dell, Lenovo, Fujitsu, and FSC as well as other partners. Nvidia hasn’t released any pricing information, but the HP Compaq 8710w will be available with the unit soon.

Nvidia is also looking to please desktop gamers with the first graphics controller in its GeForce 9 series, the GeForce 9600 GT. The 9600 GT offers performance benchmarks comparable to Nvidia’s GeForce 8800 GT, but a much more affordable price. The 9600 GT features 64 stream processors, a 256-bit memory interface, PureVideo HD technology for high-definition content playback, and 512 MB of video memory.

“After going to all the GeForce LANs and seeing the rigs that gamers play on, we wanted to kick off the GeForce 9 with the perfect GPU for gamers,” said Nvidia’s general manager for GeForce desktop GPUs Ujesh Desai, in a statement. “The first product to be introduced in the GeForce 9 family gives gamers the horsepower to play cutting-edge DirectX 10 games at a price they will love and can afford.”

The 9600 GT also supports Nvidia SLI, enabling gamers to double-up the cards and play popular games at the highest resolutions possible.

The Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT is available now for $199; higher performance models in the GeForce 9 line are sure to be announced in the coming months.

Nvidia’s new laptop GPU is 50% slower than desktop. Is it still worth buying?
Razer Blade 16 2025

Laptop gamers, rejoice -- Nvidia's best graphics cards have finally made their way to laptops. With the ongoing rollout of laptops equipped with the RTX 5090, RTX 5080, and the RTX 5070 Ti, those of us who game on the go are faced with a tough choice: Do I upgrade now or wait for the next generation?

Unfortunately, as is often the case, there's no easy answer. To make your life easier, I've looked through reviews of laptops equipped with the RTX 5090, and I'll attempt to answer that question for you. Be warned, though, that if you're expecting big generational gains, you might not find them here.

Now is not the time to buy a new graphics card
ces 2025 what to expect from amd nvidia intel jensen ceo

Graphics cards are an absolute mess right now. I know, I've talked a few times about how awesome the RX 9070 XT is, and it's certainly the best of the bunch, but just look at the state of things. Even that "value" buy in 2025 is out of stock everywhere and the alternatives are even worse. And it shouldn't be rewarded.

I probably shouldn't be telling you this. DigitalTrends makes good money from affiliate links, and I love new hardware as much as the next person. But graphics cards are not affordable right now, and buying them when they're at these inflated prices, paying for access to stock trackers and special groups just to give you the chance to pay more money to someone else, is a bad idea. It might work in the short term, but it's not something we want to establish for the future.

Buying a laptop might seem easy, but if you want the best gaming laptop within your budget, you'll need to dig beyond surface-level information. With that said, every single spec should be readily available so that you know what you're buying, but that has not always been the case.

Fortunately, Nvidia says that it's working with its partners to make sure that one key spec is always listed: The total graphics power (TGP). Here's why it matters.
Why does TGP matter in laptops?
