Expanding the storage capabilities of the portable computing market, US Modular has announced production support for 8GB sized CompactFlash cards. The storage medium is about the size of a matchbook. This new series of flash memory has a 40x speed rating, with a minimum sustained write speed of 6MB.
The current line of consumer CompactFlash offered by US Modular range from 64MB to 8GB, and speeds vary from 4X-80X. The X is a multiplier of 150Kbytes a second. They support PIO, and DMA modes, and may even be used as a fixed disk.
The cards are rated for use in the commercial temperature range of 32-159 degrees Fahrenheit, but an industrial line is available for use under extreme conditions. The industrial line is shock-resistant, and supports use in environments from -40 degrees Fahrenheit, to 185 degrees Fahrenheit.
