The nominees for the 2013 Golden Globes have been released. As always, there were some surprises, some snubs, and some very predictable nominations. And then comes the analysis. Ye gods, the analysis. On the movies side, 12 Years a Slave, Gravity, and American Hustle lead the pack, while the familiar names of Breaking Bad and House of Cards are littered throughout the television nominations.

This marks the 71st annual Golden Globes awards. The first were awarded in 1944 after a group of writers joined together to become the Hollywood Foreign Press. Since then, the group’s signature endeavor, the Golden Globes, has continued to expand and grow in both the movie and television fields. It is now seen by many as a yardstick for Oscar nominations. Except when the HFP nominated The Tourist in 2011. No one saw that coming.

The winners will be announced on January 12 during the live show, which will be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
