Guitar Controllers Get Girly with Aly & AJ

Rock and roll is often characterized as a boy’s sport, but even from its earliest days (Wanda Jackson, anyone?) the girls have been showing they can keep up with the boys just fine, thank you very much. But the same can’t be said of the still nascent music video game market, where both games and accessories have catered strongly to the predominantly-male video game crowd. So Performance Designed Products (PDP) teams up with teen pop star sisters Aly & AJ to create two new guitar controllers aimed especially at female gamers.

One guitar features a traditional body style with a pink-and-brown look, while the other is a pink-and-purple heart shape. The controllers can be used with Wii and PS2 consoles (sorry, PS3 and Xbox rockrgrrls!) and are compatible with Guitar Hero and Rock Band. PDP says it tested the designs with several hundred girls between the ages of 8 and 17, who rated the guitars based on theior graphics, colors, fret inlay, and headstock designs. One guitar is aimed at tweens ages 8 to 12, while the other targets older girls. (We’ll let you guess which is which.)

The Aly & AJ guitars should hit retailers in October with a suggested price of $69.99 each.

Epic Mickey: Rebrushed’s control tweaks reinvigorate a Wii classic

While Nintendo’s February Direct Partner Showcase included a few unexpected games, nothing was more surprising than the return of Epic Mickey. The Nintendo Wii adventure is something of a cult classic among Disney fans thanks to its unique painting hook and some clever 2D levels that pay tribute to classic Mickey Mouse cartoons. Though it’s beloved by some, reviews at the time were mixed due to some clumsy Wii-era motion controls and a poor 3D camera.

Thankfully, the Disney adventure is getting some redemption in Epic Mickey: Rebrushed. The upcoming release doesn’t just bring the Wii game to Switch but aims to fix most of its most glaring problems, too. That’s a change I expected, considering that it would need a control overhaul to work with the Switch’s more traditional button layout. What surprised me, though, is that Rebrushed isn’t just a simple HD remaster like its title seemed to imply. It’s a true remake, even if its visual upgrades are a bit modest.

The Joy-Con have become an iconic part of the Nintendo Switch console. Not only can they be connected to the Joy-Con Grip to create a traditional controller, but they can slot onto the sides of the console so you can play in handheld mode. For even more versatility, you can pass one to a friend, allowing you to partake in local multiplayer without needing to rush out and buy a second gamepad. Joy-Con typically last around 20 hours before needing to be charged – but if you're gaming frequently, you'll hit that threshold quite frequently. The same goes for the Switch Pro Controller, which offers a premium alternative to the default Joy-Con.
