After experiencing one dismal month after another on US shelves, Sony’s Playstation 3 has finally reversed the trend and begun to sell. June numbers show that sales for the system rose 21 percent – but other systems’ sales are on the rise as well.

According to NPD Group, a market research firm, sales for the PS3 hit 98,500 in June, representing the 21 percent increase from the previous month. However, the older Xbox 360 still outsold the PS3 by more than double with 198,400 systems, an increase of 28 percent for Microsoft. The clear sales leader for the month was once again Nintendo, with 381,800 Wiis sold, an increase of 13 percent.

The good news may be that Sony’s $100 price cut on the PS3 has yet to show up in the statistics. Sony claims that their internal figures show a huge boost in sales following the price cuts. “The whole world will be able to see the results when the July [NPD] charts come out,” SCEA’s Peter Dille told Next-Gen. Whether that increase gives Sony real momentum, or just a temporary success, has yet to be seen.

For much of the past decade, Xbox had one big idea: be the Netflix of gaming. Under Phil Spencer, Microsoft invested tens of billions of dollars into Game Pass, bought some of the industry's biggest publishers, and pushed the idea that subscriptions, not consoles, would define gaming's future. According to a new report from Bloomberg, that vision is now being rethought.

Microsoft spent years positioning Xbox Game Pass as the future of gaming. But according to a new report from Bloomberg, the service has fallen well short of the ambitious goals Xbox originally set for it. The report claims Xbox executives targeted 77 million Game Pass subscribers by the end of fiscal 2026. Instead, the service reportedly sits at around 30 million subscribers today, which is less than half of what Microsoft had hoped to achieve.
