Famous for including obscure Easter eggs in its games, Bungie’s final Halo 3 Easter egg has been found, compliments of Team Beyond. This comes seven years after the game’s release, and requires gamers to be playing on a specific day of the year.

In the Halo 3 loading screen, on December 25, holding down both thumbsticks gives a wider view of the Halo ring. As the ring materializes, the message “Happy Birthday, Lauren” can be seen, an Easter egg put into the game by former Bungie developer Adrian Perez for his wife.

The well-hidden egg had been teased on a couple of occasions in the Bungie Mail Sack, first being referenced in Mail Sack 9.0.

Q: Are there any Easter eggs from your past games that surprised you at how quickly they were found or any that surprised you at how long they took to find?

A: Definitely the IWHBYD skull in H3. But you cheated. There is one Easter egg in Halo 3 that I don’t think anyone has found – I stumbled across it in code a while back. It only happens on a specific day…so good luck.

And then again in Mail Sack 13, which is no longer available online but has been preserved on various easter egg hunter threads like this one.

Q: What is your proudest moment in your time at Bungie?

A: Showing my wife the Easter egg I put in the halo 3 loading screen for her – the one that nobody has found yet.

Joining other famous Halo 3 Easter eggs like the Monkey Man, the Red vs. Blue dialogue, and the Grunt of the final level, this latest egg could be one of the last discovered on the now seven year old game.

The video of the newly found Easter egg can be seen below.

The best Halo Infinite Easter eggs
A master chief plushie.

For over a decade, the Halo games have had a great sense of humor despite the incredibly dark and serious tones of the games' actual plots. This series began in the age where secrets, cheats, and unlockables were the norm in most games, especially FPS titles. Since then, the series has become almost known as much for the funny dialogue, secret cutscenes and endings, and hidden skulls as it is for their tight shooting and arena-style multiplayer. After the first game became such a smash hit, the series would also start packing in plenty of Easter eggs and references for players to find, a tradition that 343 was not willing to let die for Halo Infinite.

Now set in an open world environment, Halo Infinite opened itself up for Easter egg hunters to go crazy scouring every corner of the map for Easter eggs. Since the game's launch, a ton of secrets, both big and small, have been uncovered in the depths of Zeta Halo. Some are just tiny little jokes or references, while others are fourth-wall-breaking and self-referential, but almost all of them are hidden so well it would be unreasonable for one person to find them all. If you're curious as to what the best Halo Infinite Easter eggs are you might have missed, here's a rundown of our favorites.
