AU Optronics’ 65-inch LCD TV monitor may not be the world’s first – Sharp unveiled a 65-inch Aquos back in 2004 – but the company claims it will be only the second commercial panel of its size. And one more choice is never a bad thing.  AUO took the wraps off their FHD 120HZ panel on Wednesday, which they say reaches CRT and plasma-like response time in an LCD package.

The panel’s unusual 120Hz refresh rate is part of the simulated pulse driving technology AUO developed to solve the motion blurring problem on traditional LCDs. By doubling the standard 60Hz refresh rate, they were able to achieve an 8-millisecond moving picture response time, or a 4-second gray to gray response time. The TV also has has a 2000:1 contrast ratio and can display over a billion colors.

The senior vice president of AUO’s consumer display group thinks other companies will follow in their footsteps. “It is expected that large-sized LCD TVs with full HD, high resolution, and double frame rate 120Hz will go mainstream,” he said in a press release. This healthy competition could be good news for consumers on the retail end. AUO has yet to release information on the price and availability of the new panels.

AI Discover on Netflix

Netflix has started testing a new feature called AI Discover, which aims to make it easier for users to find something worth watching instead of mindlessly scrolling through its catalog of films and TV series. The broad idea is that you simply tell it what you’re in the mood to watch, and the AI handpicks movies and TV shows accordingly.

Netflix says AI Discover has been built around themes, which help users narrow down their choices instead of going through a list of genre presets or content types. For example, you can pick themes like a family movie, something lighthearted, something scary, or something suited to a quick watch. Once you’ve selected a theme, the AI will dive into Netflix’s catalog and show you the right content.
