Sling TV has been available on the fourth-generation Apple TV since the latest update was announced at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference event this past summer. Sony’s competing live TV streaming service, PlayStation Vue, has been conspicuously absent, however. That has finally changed, as Sony’s streaming service is finally coming to Apple’s streamer.
Dan Myers, PlayStation Vue head of product, announced the expansion to Apple TV in a blog post on Thursday. “As one of the most highly requested devices by our fans, the PlayStation Vue experience on Apple TV will provide viewers with a better option to watch your favorite live TV programming, with unique streaming features such as cloud DVR, simultaneous streaming, and no long-term contract commitments,” Myers wrote.
Like Sling TV, PlayStation Vue is only available on the fourth-generation Apple TV, but owners of older models are likely used to no longer getting new channels by now. Unlike PlayStation Vue’s app for Roku devices, it seems that the streaming service’s standard look and feel will remain intact on the Apple TV, though device-specific features like the Siri remote and touch navigation will mean some differences.
If you’re already a PlayStation Vue subscriber, all you’ll need to do is download the app and link your account. If you’re a first-time subscriber, you won’t be able to subscribe right from the Apple TV. Instead, you’ll need access to a web browser so you can sign up and link your account on the PlayStation Vue website.
PlayStation Vue allows viewers to link their accounts on up to five devices, and simultaneously stream on all of them at once, including access to the service’s cloud-based DVR. Plans start at $30, though the base price is $40 if you’re in a location where channels from local network affiliates can be included in your package. Currently these cities include New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, San Francisco, and Miami.
