Vizio cleans up its face with new 2013 sound bar line

With bezels fast becoming a thing of the past, the habitat for built-in TV speakers is rapidly disappearing. As a result, external options like speaker systems and/or sound bars are now virtually essential for the audio-conscious television owner.

We saw quite a few innovative sound bars this week at CES 2013, and though Vizio’s new 42-inch S4251W sound bar – part of the 2013 line it showcased at the event – doesn’t exactly raise the bar on sound bars in generalit does exceed Vizio’s previous efforts by adding in enhanced connectivity (including Bluetooth), a wireless subwoofer, and a clever and convenient remote feature.

Via a built-in LCD display, Vizio’s proprietary Display Remote shows the sound bar’s status, eliminating the need to rely on the often tiny letters and numbers on its face. Those with larger TV rooms will no doubt find this a subtle-but-welcome improvement.

On the audio side of things, the bar itself houses two 2.5-inch drivers while a 6-inch driver is tucked away in the system’s wire. Add in the rear satellites and you’ve got plenty of boom, plus clear audio with an SNR of 102dB. This should prove a solid system, well-suited for filling small to average sized rooms.

This 42-inch model is part of Vizio’s 2013 Home Theater Sound Bar line which also includes 40-inch and 54-inch models, each of which corresponds to a different range of TV sizes. Aside from that, the principal differences are the sub sizes (8-inch for the 54-inch, 6-inch for the others) and power levels, with the 54-inch model also sporting a slightly larger cabinet to accommodate high-excursion drivers.

The S4251W is expected to retail for $330, which is a bargain based on what we heard at CES. No word yet on release date, though Vizio did indicate at CES that the bars should be coming available sometime this spring.

Vizio debuts three soundbars with Dolby Atmos to complement its 2018 4K TVs

Vizio unveiled its 2018 4K TV lineup today, but any home theater enthusiast knows that the picture is only part of the equation -- sound is equally important. Vizio is clearly aware of this, as alongside the new TVs, the company also announced three new soundbars, all of which feature Dolby Atmos object-based surround sound for maximum immersion.

In case you’re not familiar, Dolby Atmos takes surround sound beyond the typical 5.1-channel setup by adding height information. This is generally accomplished by upward-facing speakers to bounce sound off the ceiling, so instead of 5.1, you’ll see numbers like 5.1.4 or 5.1.2, with the third number being the number of height channels. This allows for effects like the sound of a helicopter not only going left to right, but going above you as well.

Just as Dolby Vision is coming to more TVs and arriving for the first time to Ultra HD Blu-ray players at CES this year, Dolby Atmos object-based surround sound is coming to even more audio gear. For a few examples, look no further than Sony, which is introducing a new Dolby Atmos soundbar and A/V receiver.

The HT-ST5000 is Sony’s new flagship soundbar, packing 800 watts of power into a 7.1.2-channel configuration. In addition to Dolby Atmos, the soundbar features support for high-resolution audio, making for excellent music capabilities alongside its home theater-focused feature set. The soundbar features three HDMI inputs, with one HDMI ARC (audio return channel) output, supporting passthrough of 4K resolution and high dynamic range (HDR) content.

Bose refreshes its home theater lineup with a new sound bar, surround sound systems
bose soundtouch 300 lifestyle 650 600 announced 3

Over the summer, Bose finally clipped the wires on its noise-cancelling headphones, making them even better in the process. Now the company is thinking much bigger, unveiling the new SoundTouch 300 sound bar and two new Lifestyle-branded home-entertainment systems.

The SoundTouch 300 measures 38.5 inches wide, 2.25 inches high, and 4.25 deep, but Bose says that it provides sound much bigger than those measurements would indicate. The sound bar includes an HDMI port with ARC (audio return channel), allowing for easy syncing of audio, and mobile devices can also connect via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.
