Nokia Taps Apple for Browser Software

At the Nokia Connection 2005 show held in Finland, Nokia announced they are working in conjunction with Apple on a new Series 60 web browser. The Series 60 platform is built on the Symbian operating system and is licensed by Nokia to other mobile phone manufacturers such as LG Electronics, Panasonic, Samsung, Siemens and others.

The new Series 60 web browser is based on the same KHTML open source software that powers the Safari web browser for Apple’s operating systems. So naturally Nokia it only makes sense that Nokia and Apple would work together on this.

“Open source development also enables close cooperation with the industry’s best innovators, such as Apple. Both Apple and Nokia share a commitment to Internet standards and the use of a common code. The unified and compatible browser base will offer a very compelling choice for Web content developers,” said Pertti Korhonen, Chief Technology Officer, Nokia.
