Shazam music finding service adds Spotify, a music buying service

Shazam is a service for iPhone, Android, and other mobile platforms that lets you put your phone up to a song that’s playing and identify the name, album, and artist of the song. It works quite well with a library of 10 million songs to pull from. Spotify is a music streaming and download service that is trying to break its way into the U.S. market. Now they’re hooking up. Users of Shazam will soon be able to instantly stream or buy tracks from Spotify, the two companies announced today.

“Now if you hear a great new track you can identify it, listen to it instantly in its entirety and easily add it to your music collection. That’s pretty powerful stuff,” said Daniel Ek, chief executive of Spotify.

However, we do wonder if this means Shazam will be dropping support for AmazonMP3 or iTunes. When a song is tagged on Shazam, it is added to a list of tags. When brought up, you can find YouTube videos, tour info, song lyrics, buy the song on AmazonMP3 (or iTunes on iPhones), and share your discovery via a number of social sites like Twitter or Facebook. Hopefully Spotify will be added to the list of options and not replace entries on it. It would be a shame to not be able to purchase via AmazonMP3 anymore.

Those who paid for the premium version of Shazam Encore ($4.71) should have the new Spotify feature almost immediately. Users of the free version will get an update in the next few months, adding the feature.

If you have the premium version of Shazam or live in Europe, let us know what you think of Spotify.

Apple's Find My AirPods feature makes it nearly impossible to lose your 'buds

We came away impressed with AirPods, Apple's first take on wireless Bluetooth earbuds. The intrepid Digital Trends review team was especially impressed by their simplicity. But they're certainly not perfect. They sometimes drop connectivity during phone calls. They don't always charge properly. And the lack of a physical tether between the left and right earbud makes them easier than ever to misplace.

Thanks to the newest iOS update, though, that last problem's a thing of the past. Version 10.3 of Apple's mobile operating system introduces support for AirPods in the Find My iPhone app. With it, AirPod owners will be able to see the earbuds' current location. And even better, a "pinging" feature will play an audible alert on lost AirPods. Tapping the "Play Sound" option under Find My iPhone's "Actions" menu queues the sound on the earbuds, and next time they connect to a logged-in device, it will play.

This phone case lights up in time to music, ready to annoy everyone behind you at concerts
candel phone case kickstarter campaign news light

Seeing as smartphones are now commonplace at events, concerts, and festivals, we may as well make them stand out as much as possible. That seems to be the idea behind Candel, a music-activated extended battery case, with its own built-in light show. It’s on Kickstarter now, and provided the campaign’s successful, it should arrive for those late summer gatherings.

The main feature is the light-up panel on the rear, which is controlled by a microprocessor that captures music and sound from the microphone, and turns it into a synchronized visual display. Cleverly, the case monitors the amplitude and compensates for sound that’s either close by or far away, so the display always performs at its best.
