Proving that rugged phones don’t also have to be chunky, Sprint on Tuesday debuted the Motorola V950 Renegade, a slim clamshell phone that also sports some impressive protective features that allow it to pass military-spec abuse.

While not quite Razr-thin, the V950 stretches only 17mm deep, making it one of the more petite rugged phones on the market today that will pass military 810F testing for dust, shock, vibration and blowing rain. It’s also compatible with Sprint’s signature push-to-talk network using Qualcomm’s Qchat technology, which routes push-to-talk calls over Sprint’s 3G network and features next to zero latency.

Besides those more utilitarian features, Motorola has also outfitted the phone with IM capability, a 2.0-megapixel camera, and support for many of Sprint’s network services, including Sprint Music Store, Sprint Radio, Sprint TV, and Sprint Mobile Sync.

The phone is available immediately for $130 with a two-year contract and $50 mail-in rebate.

There's no shortage of messaging apps out there. The past decade has given us more options than we know what to do with, largely because smartphones demanded something better than plain old SMS.

Both the App Store and the Play Store are packed with apps that promise to revolutionize the way we communicate. Most of them didn't make it. The truth is, a messaging app is only as good as the number of people using it, and most apps never cross that threshold.
