Here’s what Bill Gates says should be on your summer reading list

Now we know what books are on Bill Gates‘ nightstand, thanks to his summer reading list for 2020.

Gates posted his top five books, along with a few extras (about meditation, memory, and Mars), on his site GatesNotes. He also added some movies and TV shows he’s been enjoying, as well as the tidbit that he plays online bridge with tycoon Warren Buffett.

Here are Gates’ ideas for some good beach reads (though you’ll maybe have to sit in front of a tropical screensaver instead of visiting the real deal).

5 summer book recommendations

1. The Choice: Embrace the Impossible by Dr. Edith Eva Eger

The New York Times called this 2017 book a “mind-blowing memoir.” The Auschwitz survivor became a therapist, and she wrote about how healing her patients helped her deal with her own trauma. “Her unique background gives her amazing insight, and I think many people will find comfort right now from her suggestions on how to handle difficult situations,” Gates wrote.

2. Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell

This 2004 novel (which later became a movie starring Tom Hanks, et al.) is a set of interwoven stories set in myriad times and places. By the time David Mitchell brings them all together, you can’t “bear the journey to end,” according to A. S. Byatt. “But if you’re in the mood for a really compelling tale about the best and worst of humanity, I think you’ll find yourself as engrossed in it as I was,” Gates said.

3. The Ride of a Lifetime: Lessons Learned from 15 Years as CEO of the Walt Disney Company by Bob Iger

This 2019 book from Bob Iger was part of his swan song as he retired as CEO of Disney. Now, he’s returned as the company weathers the pandemic. Gates calls it, “one of the best business books I’ve read in several years.”

4. The Great Influenza by John M. Barry

A lot of people are reading (or rereading) this 2004 nonfiction book from historian John M. Barry. At the time, the Kirkus review called it, a “majestic, spellbinding treatment of a mass killer.” Gates agrees: “Barry will teach you almost everything you need to know about one of the deadliest outbreaks in human history.”

5. Good Economics for Hard Times: Better Answers to Our Biggest Problems by Abhijit V. Banerjee and Esther Duflo

Two Nobel-winning economists wrote this 2019 book, which looks at trade, immigration, universal basic income, and automation. Big issues, but according to Gates, “Fortunately for us, they’re also very good at making economics accessible to the average person.”

We finally know the price of Asus’ most powerful gaming NUC
The Asus ROG NUC on a desk surrounded by three monitors.

The first Asus ROG NUC (Next Unit of Computing) model is just around the corner. The small form factor PC is now up for pre-order at a German retailer, and although it's powerful enough to rival some of the best laptops, it costs more than many comparable models -- and you'll still have to pay extra for a monitor.

Asus' first take on Intel's portable PC contains a lot of compute power in a small chassis. Although there are a few configurations of the PC, the one that was spotted up for sale ahead of time comes with Intel's latest Meteor Lake-H CPU, the Core Ultra 9 185H, which sports 16 cores and 22 threads and can be boosted to run at up to 5.1GHz, all with a thermal design power (TDP) of 45 watts. However, Asus allows overclocking, meaning that the CPU can run at up to 65 watts instead.

YouTube tells creators to start labeling ‘realistic’ AI content
YouTube on Roku.

YouTube is taking steps to try to help viewers better understand if what they’re watching has been created, whether completely or in part, by generative AI.

“Generative AI is transforming the ways creators express themselves -- from storyboarding ideas to experimenting with tools that enhance the creative process,” YouTube said in a message shared on Monday. “But viewers increasingly want more transparency about whether the content they’re seeing is altered or synthetic.”

AMD is making the CPU more and more obsolete in gaming
A demo of AMD GPU work graphs featuring in-game scenery including a castle and a town.

At GDC 2024, AMD just expanded on Microsoft's recently announced Work Graphs API, and a quick demo shows just how powerful the new tech can be for gaming performance. AMD's iteration moves draw calls and mesh nodes from the CPU to the GPU, cutting back on the time it takes to execute these tasks. As a result, AMD found that there was a massive performance improvement -- rendering time saw a 64% boost -- when using Work Graphs with mesh shaders.

Microsoft introduced Work Graphs as a way to streamline processes both in gaming and in productivity, all by giving the GPU the power to schedule and execute tasks without first communicating with the CPU. It's built into the Direct3D 12 API and it can reduce bottlenecks and improve gaming performance in 3D games.
