WhatsApp group chats get permanent message pins, private Status updates, and more

Finding important messages in your busiest WhatsApp groups should now become a little less frustrating.

WhatsApp is introducing four new features to group conversations, aimed at making it easier for users to manage important messages and catch up on conversations they may have missed. The latest additions include Group Status, permanent message pinning, a dedicated filter for mentions and replies, and the ability to share recent message history even after someone has joined a group.

The updates address a common problem with busy WhatsApp groups, where conversations can accumulate hundreds of messages within a few hours, making it difficult to find important information or keep track of messages that actually need your attention.

Group Status and permanent message pins

The new Group Status feature allows users to share updates exclusively with members of a particular group. Unlike the regular Status feature, where updates are shared with a selected audience from your contacts, Group Status keeps them within the conversation. Members can view, react, and share their own updates, while the content automatically disappears after 24 hours.

WhatsApp is also removing the expiry restriction on pinned messages. Previously, users had to select how long a message would remain pinned at the top of a conversation. The latest update adds an option to keep messages pinned indefinitely, which should come in handy for groups where important information needs to remain accessible for longer periods.

Finding and catching up on important messages

Earlier this year, WhatsApp introduced a feature that allows recent message history to be shared when adding someone to a group. The company is now extending that functionality by allowing users to share those messages even after the new member has joined. Just tap their name in the conversation to send the earlier messages, which remain end-to-end encrypted.

Another addition is a dedicated filter for mentions and replies. It brings together unread group conversations where someone has mentioned you, replied directly to your message, or used @all. Meaning, users won’t have to go through every unread group conversation to find messages specifically directed at them.

WhatsApp has also been working on improving message discovery through a recently introduced search shortcut on iPhones. Scheduled messages are another feature currently being tested, although it is yet to reach the stable version of the app.

Apple admits iPhone Duo is in limited supply, and it’s unclear if you can bag one for your holiday cart

Apple executives rarely say “we can’t predict that” about their brand-new products, so I perked up when one did.

The Cupertino giant has admitted the iPhone Duo is supply-constrained. COO Sabih Khan told investors on Monday’s earnings call that it is “constrained as of today” (via Investing.com).

Apple issues a grim warning as memory costs soar. It seems pricey iPhones and Macs are here to stay
Apple’s memory bill is climbing, and your receipt may follow.
MacBook Pro PROLED XDR laptop

Whether it’s iPhones, iPads, or MacBooks, Apple has already slapped revised price tags on a long list of products. Since these products already cost hundreds of dollars more than they did (especially MacBooks and the Mac mini, which use highly capable M-series chips), I was quietly hoping this was it.

However, during its recent earnings call, Apple ended that hope. The company has warned that memory chip prices are climbing at an “unprecedented” pace, with CEO John Ternus telling investors that costs will be even higher in the December quarter (via The Guardian).

Adobe Premiere mobile app is getting licensed music from Universal and Warner Music
On the editing side, there’s a bit of a restriction, as users can only add 60 seconds of a song to their video.

Adobe has just announced that it’s bringing licensed music from Universal Music Group (UMG) and Warner Music Group (WMG) to its Adobe Premiere mobile app. Thanks to the partnership, users will be able to search for and find music from these two giants right in the app.

For social media users, this partnership also solves a huge problem. When people post content with music playing in the background, it’s often flagged for copyright violations on social media platforms. Now, if they pick a soundtrack distributed by either Universal Music Group or Warner Music Group, they can simply add it to their videos and post them freely across social media for personal use, without having to worry about copyright strikes and takedown notices.
