A wannabe weatherman allegedly started a wildfire to boost Facebook views

We’ve heard quite a bit about fake news on Facebook just recently, but this latest story surely takes the cake.

Taking the idea to a whole other level, Kentucky resident Johnny Mullins is alleged to have started a wildfire so he could report on it, apparently in the hope of driving more traffic to his Facebook page.

Mullins, 21, was arrested last week after admitting to cops he intentionally started a fire to score more views for his “Weather Outlook” Facebook videos, the Associated Press reported.

In the video, the wannabe weatherman reported on the extent of the smoke plumes and warned drivers in the area to take care. Reporting from the scene, he even took the time to offer important advice: “If you have a water hose, spray near your home so that your home will not catch on fire,” he told property owners in one of his reports. Finishing up, he promised to keep viewers updated on the state of the fire.

James Stephens, the police chief in Jenkins, Kentucky, where Mullins was arrested, told the Associated Press that the suspect “likes to do Facebook videos and have people follow him on his ‘weather forecast,’ so that’s pretty much why he did what he did.”

“He enjoyed the attention he got from the Facebook stuff,” Stephens said, adding that Mullins “didn’t realize how much danger he was putting other people in. It’s really too bad because he’s not a bad kid – he’s just misguided.”

It’s not clear how much damage was caused by his alleged actions, but the authorities have nevertheless hit him with a second-degree arson charge.

The deliberate starting of wildfires is a constant problem for the authorities, but reporting on  your own ignitions to boost your Facebook profile appears to be a first.

Fake news of a different kind has put the social networking giant in the crosshairs of critics in recent days, with some suggesting it could even have influenced the outcome of last week’s presidential election.

Around half of Americans now turn to Facebook for their news fix, according to the Pew Research Center, but the company’s system for filtering content sometimes misses fake stories, such as the one prior to election day that stated Pope Francis was backing Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently described the suggestion that fake news on the site could’ve influenced the election as “pretty crazy,” though promised that the social networking giant is continuing with efforts to weed out phony content from its News Feed.

Facebook is trying to fight fake news and misinformation on its platform by hiring Reuters to fact-check, but it’s still not verifying political ads.  

The new fact-checking unit at Reuters, which launched on Wednesday, will look at the content posted on Facebook and Instagram and identify when it is fake or misleading. A Reuter’s spokesperson told Digital Trends that the types of posts would include photos, videos, and headlines. Ads are noticeably missing from that list of fact-checked content.

Facebook has removed fake accounts originating from Russia, Iran, Vietnam, and Myanmar because of “coordinated inauthentic behavior.” 

The social network announced in a Wednesday blog post from Nathaniel Gleicher, head of cybersecurity policy at Facebook, the removal of pages, groups, and accounts from both Facebook and Instagram that originated in these countries. The behavior was reportedly on behalf of a government or foreign actor.

It’s no secret that Facebook has had a lot of problems in recent years when it comes to privacy mishaps, fake news, and a general lack of transparency. Based on the latest profit numbers, it looks like Facebook’s rocky past might finally be catching up to the social network. 

Facebook’s stock dropped 8% on Thursday, which equates to about $50 billion from the company’s market cap, according to CNBC. The company' annual profits fell 16%, its first year-over-year tumble since 2014.
