AOL Backs Google’s OpenSocial

AOL Backs Google

AOL has decided to ratchet up its presence in the social networking world by throwing its support behind Google’s OpenSocial API, a toolkit that lets develoeprs write a single online application that can operate on a range of social networks. Recent AOL acquiree Bebo already supports OpenSocial; Internet giant Yahoo has also announced support for the technology, as have LInkedIn, Google’s own Orkut, and Hi5. AOL plans to first support OpenSocial’s Gadget specification for embedded apps within myAOL, but eventually support OpenSocial across AOL’s line of products and services.

Yahoo Backs Google’s OpenSocial

In a move that’s certain not to sit well with Yahoo’s would-be overlords in Redmond, the company has announced a partnership with MySpace and Google to form the non-profit OpenSocial Foundation, dedicated to driving the development of platform-neutral social applications for the Internet. The OpenSocial Foundation will service as a community-driven, neutral forum for developing applications for Google’s OpenSocial API. The organization will operate as a non-profit, with member organizations assigning it assets by July 1.  Read more...

Google to Push Widgets with OpenSocial

Internet titan Google getting ready to enter the social networking business—not with Orkut, an early social networking effort now dominated by Brazilians, but with OpenSocial, a new distribution platform designed to distribute online applications (a.k.a. widgets) to a broad range of social networking sites. Instead of running its own social networking site, Google wants to be the back-end that pushes applications and widgets to those sites, with the promise that if developers built their applications for OpenSocial, it’ll work across all supported sites. And Google isn’t planning to make money on OpenSocial right away—but, of course, everyone eventually expects it to be lashed to Google’s enormous online advertising efforts.
