Given the popularity of Joel Schumacher’s 1987 classic The Lost Boys, it’s a little surprising that we haven’t seen a reboot in the works yet — particularly since the two direct-to-video sequels to the film didn’t do very well. What we are getting, however, is a direct sequel to the original movie that picks up right after the events of Schumacher’s film.
Oh, and it’s a comic book.
Hitting shelves in October, The Lost Boys miniseries will be published by DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint, and focus on the surviving members of the cast who discover that the absence of the vampire leader they eliminated has only attracted more vampires to the town of Santa Clara, California. Brothers Michael and Sam Emerson — played by Jason Patric and Corey Haim, respectively, in the original film — must once again team up with the eccentric Edgar and Alan Frog (originally portrayed by Corey Feldman and Jamison Newlander) in order to defeat a coven of vampires calling themselves “Blood Belles.”
The series is penned by veteran horror comics writer Tim Seeley (Hack/Slash) and illustrated by Scott Godlewski (Copperhead) and Patricia Mulvihill (Hellblazer), with cover art by Tony Harris.
“I saw The Lost Boys at a formative time in my life, when a VHS, a VCR and a summer afternoon were a perfect escape into a crazy world of biker vampires with mullets and monster-fighting hippy grandpas,” Seeley told Variety of the series. “The Lost Boys was one of my entry points into the horror genre, and I’ve been fascinated ever since. Getting the chance to write a sequel to the film, featuring the original characters, and getting to work with Scott, Patricia, and Tony is truly a high point in my comic book-making career.”
The first issue of the series arrives in comic shops October 12, but Variety has an early look at a cover and some of the interior art.
