Released just in time for Comic-Con 2016, Netflix debuted a new teaser trailer for the upcoming Marvel adaptation of Luke Cage as well as announced the return of everyone’s favorite blind superhero, Daredevil. First seen in the Marvel series Jessica Jones, Luke Cage appears to have stopped shunning his gift of invulnerability in order to take on criminals that infest Harlem, New York.
Debuting on September 30, 2016, the first season of Luke Cage will see the reluctant hero taking on Cornell Stokes, the drug kingpin known as Cottonmouth in the comics. Stokes will be played by actor Mahershala Ali, who is also featured in Netflix’s House of Cards as Remy Danton. Other Marvel characters appearing in Luke Cage season one will include Diamondback and Misty Knight as well as the return of Night Nurse, the character played by Rosario Dawson.

In addition to the Luke Cage announcement, Netflix indicated that a third season of Daredevil is in the works. Providing only a cryptic teaser for the Twitterverse, Netflix hasn’t announced a launch date for the next season of the popular superhero drama. It’s likely that season three of Daredevil will not include Frank Castle since Netflix has ordered a full season of The Punisher due to the popularity of Jon Bernthal’s portrayal of the iconic vigilante.
In related news, Netflix announced the debut for the first season of The Defenders within a teaser, lacking in details, as well as a first-look teaser trailer for Marvel’s Iron Fist. (You can watch both teasers below.) Both of the series are slated for a 2017 debut, but Netflix is keeping quiet on exact release dates. With such an extensive slate of upcoming Marvel television shows, it’s likely that the popularity of the comic book adaptations are driving significant subscriber growth for the streaming video company.
