Precious: Dell’s new XPS 13 will have a rose gold option

With Intel’s seventh-generation Kaby Lake CPUs not far away, we’re starting to see the first hints of consumer products using the new hardware. In the case of Dell, we have the newly announced, revamped XPS 13. A fan favorite, the laptop is going to come available in a brand new metallic coating too: rose gold.

Although still rather a niche market, Apple and a number of other companies have shown that some people really do like covering their electronics in precious metals. Dell has seen success with a limited run of gold laptops as well, and is looking to continue that trend with the new-generation XPS13, by adding the rose gold version.

The color tone is a sort-of metallic pink, though hardly a strong coloring. It has a distinctly female connotation though, so perhaps Dell is looking to make inroads in the typically less-explored female electronics market.

Admittedly it does stand out, especially among a sea of typical laptop greys and blacks, but considering the rose gold version starts at $1,500, $700 more than the stock model, it might be hard to justify.

What won’t be hard to justify is the internal hardware, which is typically strong. There will be new options for Kaby Lake processors from the Core i3, i5 and i7 ranges, offering varied performance at different price points. The new generation will have much better support for 4K video though, which will be a nice touch for those who splash out more for the near-4K 3,200 x 1,800 touchscreen (thanks Engadget).

You can also have up to 16GB of RAM and a terabyte of SSD storage, though all XPS 13s will come fitted with Killer Wireless-AC Wi-Fi and up to 22 hours of use thanks to the large internal battery. Physically the XPS 13 is very slim at just 15mm at its thickest and weighs in at just 2.7 pounds.

The new Dell XPS 13 range will be released on October 4.

This midrange HP laptop beats the Dell XPS 15 in one important way
Photo of an HP Envy 16 laptop.

Dell's XPS 15 has found its place on a number of our best-of lists, including best laptops and best 15-inch laptops. There are a number of reasons for those accolades, including a robust, yet relatively thin and light design, as well as strong performance and lovely displays.

But that doesn't mean it faces no competition. HP's Envy 16 2023 is a 16-inch laptop that gives the XPS 15 a run for its money. It's around the same price and offers similar or better performance. Is that enough to replace the XPS 15 on our lists?

The Dell XPS 15 has one major advantage over the MacBook Pro
The screen of the 2021 MacBook Pro.

It's no secret that 15-inch laptops (and bigger) are the powerhouses of portable computing. They're used for gaming, content creation, video editing, and serious work.

Two of the best laptops are the Dell XPS 15 and the Apple MacBook Pro 16, each of which recently received updates to faster CPUs and GPUs, but otherwise remained mostly the same. Both are excellent laptops that offer great performance, outstanding build quality, and excellent input options -- but which one is right for you? Well, if it comes down to price, the XPS 15 the much more affordable option. That alone will make the decision easy for some people.

Why the Dell XPS 13 Plus still beats the latest competition in little laptops
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano Gen 3 front view showing display and keyboard.

Lenovo recently updated its smallest ThinkPad, the ThinkPad X1 Nano, to its third generation. It kept everything the same except for an upgrade to Intel 13th-gen CPUs. Dell did the same with the recent refresh of the XPS 13 Plus. These are both competent 13-inch laptops.

That was a safer direction for Dell, given that the XPS 13 Plus sports an ultramodern appearance. The ThinkPad X1 Nano Gen 3, on the other hand, remains a nice little laptop but its design is getting a bit dated. Can it compete with the more contemporary XPS 13 Plus?
