Awards season is in full swing, with the major television and film organizations rolling out their nominees from the past year of projects and performances. The nominations for the 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were among those announced this week, and its pool of nominees offers an interesting take on how the medium of television — and movies, to a lesser degree — is changing and evolving.

Projects produced (or co-produced) by streaming video services Netflix and Amazon Studios account for 22 of the nominations on this year’s list of SAG Awards nominees across television and film, and nearly half of the nominations from the world of television.

This year’s SAG Award nominees were announced by Chicago P.D. and One Tree Hill actress Sophia Bush and Selma and Wanted actor Common during a ceremony in West Hollywood. Netflix projects and their cast members accounted for 17 nominations total, while Amazon Studios netted four nominations for the cast of Manchester by the Sea, a co-production with studio Roadside Attractions, as well as one nomination for its Transparent series.

After Netflix, the studio that found its cast members most frequently honored with nominations this year was HBO. The premium cable network earned 13 nominations for cast members in Game of ThronesThe Night Of, and Westworld, among other projects.

The ceremony announcing the winners of Screen Actors Guild Awards will be televised live Sunday, January 29, 2017. The broadcast will kick off at 8pm ET on the TNT and TBS networks.

A woman puts a crown on a man in The Crown.

Netflix is home to many great shows. It's also the most prolific and well-known streaming service of them all, with a large catalog of original and acquired content. However, the King of Streamers is also famous for being quite trigger-happy. Indeed, Netflix is no stranger to canceling its shows, even if it spent millions producing them; if they don't yield immediate results, the streamer will pull the plug without blinking an eye.

Still, many original shows have beaten the cancellation curse and had a successful life, at least by streaming standards. These shows are Netflix's best efforts that actually got to enjoy a full life cycle, receiving more than five seasons. None might come close to the 100-episode mark, but these beloved series prove to hopeful showrunners everywhere that there is indeed life on Netflix after season 5.
