Borderlands 3 release date leaks on its own Twitter account

The long-awaited sequel was officially revealed by Gearbox Software recently and we are only a couple of days away from getting more information, but the Borderlands 3 information docket may have sprung a leak. A tweet unleashed mayhem upon the world, sharing that Borderlands 3 will be launching on September 13 and those who pre-order the game will get the Gold Weapon Skins pack.

Gearbox took to the first day of PAX East 2019 to officially reveal Borderlands 3 during an hour-long panel that was hosted at the event and livestream around the world. The news that it would be releasing on September 13 came via the official Borderlands Twitter account but the tweet was soon deleted. PC Gamer reports that the date fits in with the 2019 window that Take-Two Interactive previously revealed and it also isn’t far off from another rumored release date of October 1.

September 13 would place Borderlands 3 a few days ahead of the seven-year anniversary of Borderlands 2’s launch, which took place on September 18, 2012. The first Borderlands game launched in October 2009. Gearbox Software doesn’t have to stick to any particular rules when launching their games, but this leak does fit a pattern. In addition, Twitter user Wario64 captured a now-deleted Twitter ad video that didn’t show the exact release date but did have the Epic Games store logo in the lower right.

Now, April 1 is a tough day when it comes to news coverage. There are obvious spoofs mixed in with sneaky reveals that toe the line between fact and fiction, so this particular “mistake” from Gearbox could be a cleverly executed April Fools joke.

Revealing that Borderlands 3 is coming exclusively to the Epic Games store, though, would be a cruel April Fools joke. The reception has been mixed as Epic Games attempts to cut into the Steam-dominated pie by signing contracts for timed-exclusive distribution of PC titles and Borderlands 3 would be a major get for the company. Overall, tweeting and deleting this information makes this lean a bit more toward truth. Nevertheless, we’ll all be tuned in on Wednesday, April 3 to get more info on the game and see if any of this is confirmed.

The Dishonored series has always been a critical darling and it has cultivated a small, but passionate fanbase. The original game got some DLC, a sequel in Dishonored 2, and one last entry called Death of the Outsider in 2017, but since then the franchise has remained dormant. The studio's latest game, Deathloop, shares some DNA with Dishonored, but is certainly its own beast. However, since the success of that new IP far exceeded anything Dishonored had achieved, many fans felt we'd never return to Dunwall to see the conclusion of the story. Thanks to the recent leak of some court documents related to the Activision purchase by Xbox, which owns Dishonored publisher Bethesda, new hope has appeared for the existence of Dishonored 3.
Release window

According to the leaked documents, which we should still take with skepticism until an official public statement is made, Dishonored 3 is currently planned for a "FY24E" release. FY24E is shorthand for Fiscal Year 2024, which runs between April 2024 and March 2025. Again, things are likely to change, if they haven't already, but this is at least a good starting point to predict the earliest we might see it.

Again, this is just speculation until the game is officially confirmed, but considering that Xbox owns publisher Bethesda, Dishonored 3 is almost certainly going to be an Xbox console exclusive with a PC port. It should also be available as a day one Game Pass title, as all Xbox first party titles are.

As mentioned, Dishonored 3 isn't even meant to be known about publicly yet, so no marketing exists for the game. All we have is the name.

As part of the massive Xbox leak that came as part of its FTC trial, we got a look at Microsoft's road map for Xbox through 2030. One slide of this presentation outlines the kinds of hardware possible for Microsoft to make (and not make) itself. Most notably, Microsoft states in this document that making a dedicated Xbox handheld is "not in scope for first party."

Microsoft has been an avid supporter of devices like the Logitech G Cloud Gaming Handheld and ROG Ally with Xbox Cloud Gaming, but it was still quite surprising that the company never aimed to release a handheld that competed with those and Nintendo Switch itself. Now, we know that as far back as this May 2022 roadmap, Microsoft did not believe it currently has the resources and scope to make a Handheld.

Baldur's Gate 3 will come out for all PS5 players officially on September 6 at 9 a.m. PT / 12 p.m. ET. Anyone who purchased the Digital Deluxe Edition gets 72 hours of early access, meaning you can start playing on September 3 instead.
