Pioneer AV Receivers Bring 3D, 7.1 Audio, and iPhone Control

Pioneer has taken the wraps off three new AV receivers that feature 7.1 channel audio support, are 3D-ready, and can be controlled via iPhone or iPod touch (and, presumably, iPad) via Pioneer’s new iControlAV application. The receivers also support Bluetooth audio streaming and, of course, the receivers are all “Works with iPhone” certified to tap into music, photo, and video content stored on Apple’s iconic little gizmos.

“Last year, the Pioneer line of A/V receivers set record growth in the under $500 price point. We know that the dramatic growth was a direct result of our enhancements to convenience and connectivity options expected from Apple users,” said Pioneer Electronics marketing manager David Bales, in a statement. “This year, with the addition of our new app and Bluetooth audio streaming, we expect to hold the leadership position in this category.”

The three new receivers—the VSX-920-K, VSX-1020-K, and flagship VSX-1120-K—appl sport HDMI 1.4 to handle 3D content from Blu-ray devices and other high-definition video sources. The receivers also support Dolby ProLogic IIz height channel, which can create a more immersive experience by putting non-directional sounds in front facing “height” speakers, adding more depth to the surround sound mix.

The VSX-920-K sports 4 HDMI inputs and 110 watts per channel, while the VSX-1020-K steps up to 6 HDMI inputs (including one up front) and adds the ability to display on-screen album art and set up two-AV zones. At the top of the heap, the VSX-1120-K steps up to 120 watts per channel and Marvell 1080p processing, offers an RS-232 port and PC control.

The VSK-920-K and VSX-1020-K will be available in May for suggested prices of $399 and $549, respectively; the VSX-1120-K will follow in June for a suggested price of $749.

This puts Samsung and LG on an even playing field in terms of OLED pricing, at least as it relates to LG's OLED C4 lineup.

Samsung has also confirmed new sizes for its S90D OLED TV, which will now be available in tiny (42-inch) and huge (83-inch) versions in addition to the previously announced 48-, 55-, 65-, and 77-inch models.
