Canada’s Research in Motion might be focused on convincing businesses and consumers its PlayBook tablet is the latest thing since sliced bread, but the company is still making moves to beef up its software portfolio: RIM has acquired Tungle, a startup the makes a calendar- and schedule-syncing application that works across a variety of platforms, and reaches out to social networks like Facebook.
“As of today, the entire team is joining the ranks of RIM,” Tungle wrote on its blog. “This is exciting for you too as we expect the Tungle service to only get better. Our plan today is what it has always been—for Tungle to become integrated with your daily activities and be ubiquitous within the applications you’re already using. When you think scheduling, Tungle should be at your fingertips.”
Financial terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed.
The Tungle.me service enables schedule syncing across a broad range of calendar platforms, including Outlook, Google Calendar, Apple’s iCal, Windows Live, BlackBerry Yahoo Calendar, and even Lotus Notes. The service can also plug in to social networks, including LinkedIn, Plancast, TripIt, and Facebook. Tungle has gained traction amongst users for syncing up without generating duplicated events or getting confused over time zones, while keeping users’ calendar details private. Mobile apps for Tungle.me are available for iPhones and BlackBerry devices; the company had promised an Android version would be available soon.
