Its been nigh on 20 years since Ash took up arms against the armies of the undead, but it looks like there is officially a new Evil Dead movie in the works. Bruce Campbell won’t be starring in this latest addition to the cult franchise but he will be somewhere on the production end.
The Evil Dead is a horror movie that gave the world its first taste of Bruce Campbell and acclaimed director and producer Sam Raimi in 1981. The Evil Dead series follows Ashley “Ash” Williams as he deals with the undead or “deadites” produced by the an evil book called the Necronomicon. The first Evil Dead film subsequently gave birth to Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn and then the 1992 hit Army of Darkness which dropped Ash off in medieval England.
News about the remake of the Evil Dead movie began stirring at Dread Central whose sources said that Sam Raimi’s long-time editor Bob Murawski was heading out to Detroit to work on the new Evil Dead project. Murawski has been with Raimi since Darkman and worked on Army of Darkness as well as the Spider-Man movies. The veteran editor said this new entry will be low-budget and “a small indie thing like the first two”.
Bruce Campbell joined Twitter over the weekend and confirmed that the movie was being made. Campbell responded to a cynical fan who didn’t believe in the new project. The actor tweeted “Believe in the remake, dawg! The project is real. In the works. Cool as hell. Scary as hell.”
Finally, Bloody Disgusting is saying that Sam Raimi is “gearing up to produce a quasi-remake of The Evil Dead” and that a guy named Federico Alvarez will probably be directing. Alvarez struck a deal with Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures after his short film Panic Attack found success on the internet in 2009.
