Persona 5 Royal owners on PS4 can’t upgrade to PS5 version

Atlus Japan has revealed that those who already own the PlayStation 4 version of Persona 5 Royal will not be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version. The game will have to be purchased again at its listed price when it launches on October 21 along with the PC, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox versions.

Atlus Japan’s recent FAQ post asks, “If I purchased Persona 5 Royal for PlayStation 4, can I upgrade to Persona 5 Royal for the PlayStation 5?” The answer is a resounding no, saying, “We’re sorry, but there are no items for purchasers of Persona 5 Royal for PlayStation 4 in this game. When you play on your PlayStation 5, we hope you can purchase Persona 5 Royal for PlayStation 5.”

It’s unclear whether the upgrade decision also applies to Smart Delivery on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. Xbox’s Smart Delivery program allowed seamless transitions between cross-generational games while PlayStation’s upgrade path from PS4 to PS5 often involves having two separate SKUs.

A good example of this was when Marvel’s Avengers got its PS5 and Xbox Series upgrades last year, many PlayStation users had trouble migrating their data to the new versions while the process on Xbox was much easier as the platform recognizes the game using the same identifier.

This isn’t the only debacle involving upgrades on PlayStation. Earlier this week, players found out that they were unable to play the Intermission content in Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade through PlayStation Plus if they already owned the base game on PlayStation 4. However, Sony has since fixed the issue and now players should be able to access it without further problems.

Persona 5 Tactica is making the tactics genre more approachable than ever

After being a beloved series in the RPG community for almost 15 years, Persona 5 finally launched the wider Persona franchise into the mainstream in 2017 thanks to its over-the-top, slick, and stylish presentation. Since then, developer Atlus has tastefully built off that success. We’ve received an updated version of Persona 5 with its Royal edition, Joker joined the fight in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and the Phantom Thieves starred in a variety of spinoffs that dipped into the action-RPG and rhythm game genres. Now, the Persona 5 crew is taking on the tactics genre in the fittingly titled Persona 5 Tactica.

While my PAX West demo of Persona 5 Tactica was brief and did not contain any story content, it still showed me how the strategy game is making itself approachable for casual players in a way that’s not so different from what Persona 5 did for RPGs so many years ago.
New genre, same strategy
I love tactics games, but I’m admittedly not very good at them. I almost always enjoy a good challenge, but the genre tends to be heavy on complex management that can leave me overthinking every choice. Battles can be long and slow too, so if I end up losing, I feel like I lost a lot of time. That said, I love the strategy behind many tactics games, which usually lets me push past that friction.

Starfield isn’t on PS5, but you can play these great alternatives on PS Plus

The long-awaited game Starfield is finally available for some players, but it's notably an Xbox Series X/S console exclusive. That means console-only players who don't own one of Microsoft's latest systems are out of luck and will have to look for some alternatives. Thankfully, there are some other viable options on Sony's own PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscription service.
From previous Bethesda Game Studios titles that will provide a similar RPG experience to other games set in space or about exploring a galaxy of planets, there are seven ones that we think those without an Xbox, PC, or cloud gaming connection to play Starfield with should check out. While the price of an annual subscription to PS Plus is going up soon, all of these games are playable for no additional cost if you have a PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium subscription.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

If you're looking for a choice-driven RPG to play, there's nothing shameful about replaying Bethesda Game Studios' The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. First released in 2011 and rereleased many times, Skyrim is one of the best fantasy RPGs ever made, with an expansive world, lots of character classes that add to the game's replay value, and tons of interesting lore and stories for the player to discover. There's a good chance you've already played Skyrim at this point, but if you somehow haven't or just really need something to scratch that Western RPG itch because you can't play Starfield, it's impossible to go wrong with one of the best games of the 2010s.

You saw it coming: Persona 3 and Persona 5 Tactica officially revealed

Persona 3 Reload

Atlus revealed Persona 3 Reload, a remake of the 2006 Persona 3 game, as well as Persona 5 Tactica, a strategy game title, during the Xbox Games Showcase.

The former is set for an early 2024 release, while the latter will launch on November 17. Both games will be included in Xbox Game Pass. Persona 3 Reload is a full remake in the style of Persona 5, while Persona 5 Tactica is a tactics-like game with Chibi-like cartoon graphics similar to the Persona Q and Q2 games released for Nintendo 3DS.
