Webaroo Aims to Offer Netless Surfing

Startup company Webaroo thinks they can help you search the Web better. No, they aren’t a new search engine. No, they aren’t a meta-search engine, combining results from multiple sources. No, they aren’t offering some sort of ranked-source system which purports to float reliable or merit-worthy items to the top of search results.

Webaroo lets you search the Web when you’ve not connected to the Internet.

Webaroo purports to offer a feast, free, and ubiquitous Web searching capability for mobile devices even when the Internet isn’t available. Webaroo works by providing on-disk “Web packs” of information on a variety of subjects, like news, sports, major global cities, and others, each of which contains thousands of Web pages identified and loaded up by Webaroo’s system. When users are online, they can select and download their favorite Web sites to search when the net’s not available; the Webaroo Web packs also update themselves, making sure you have up-to-date information at your fingertips. Webaroo’s algorithms focus on pages with high quality content, broad coverage of information, and small size. Users see Webaroo-stored Web pages in their full original glory, complete with images.

“As mobile use grows, consumers want to be able to do more with their mobile devices,” said Rakesh Mathur, Webaroo’s CEO. “Webaroo brings the power of web search to mobile devices with an innovative product that is truly ubiquitous and fast. At home or on the go, in the air or on vacation, users can now find the information they need, wherever they are.”

Computer maker Acer today announced it plans to bundle Webaroo on its laptop PCs worldwide. Campbell Kan, Head of Acer’s Mobile Computing Business Unit, said, “Acer is committed to being first-to-market with innovative products that are easy-to-use, dependable and empowering — enabling our users to be more productive. We plan on incorporating Webaroo’s software into Acer’s mobile PCs. We look forward to creating mutual success for Acer and Webaroo and even greater satisfaction for our customers.” The version of Webaroo to be bundled with Acer systems is rumored to weigh in at about 40 GB.

Webaroo is free, but the company plans to add capabilities for selected advertisers to embed messages in the Webaroo Web packs

The upcoming Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is set to get a much faster S Pen, according to recent reports. The device will allegedly replace the Galaxy Note line as Samsung increases its focus on foldables. It is reportedly getting a faster and more responsive S Pen than the last Galaxy Note -- three times as fast, actually.

Tech YouTuber Zaryab Khan, who recently dumped a product brochure detailing the Galaxy S22 series online, now claims that the S Pen latency has been toned down to an impressive 2.98 milliseconds. This means a reduction of latency by a 3x margin. To put that into perspective, the S Pen that arrived with the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra offered input latency of 9 milliseconds. The second-generation Apple Pencil also maxes out at the same number as Samsung’s stylus.

The Xiaomi 12 Pro debuts with a 120W fast charging trick in its arsenal. One of the most common grievances that smartphone users report when it comes to fast charging is things getting toasty, which is not good for the battery’s health. To circumvent the problem, the Xiaomi 12 Pro will adopt a dual-charging mode approach. First in line is a low-temperature charging mode that keeps the temperature below the 37-degree centigrade mark. Of course, it is going to reduce the raw charging throughput, but in doing so, it ensures that the battery is juiced up without any risks whatsoever.

Nokia 9 PureView won’t get Android 11 after all; HMD offers a discount instead

HMD Global is breaking the update promise it made with the Nokia 9 PureView. The company shared that due to circumstances beyond its control, it would be unable to update the phone to Android 11. Instead, a discount will be offered to the Android 11-capable Nokia XR20 instead as a replacement for eligible Nokia 9 owners.

As part of the Android One program, Nokia phones benefited from the promise of at least two operating system updates, something that was emphasized as one of the selling points of phones like the Nokia 9 PureView, which launched with Android 9 and really should have received Android 11 over a year ago. While HMD Global has been notoriously inconsistent with regard to timing, this is the first time the company has simply declined to push out an update.
