After settling down for a short while, the smartphone gold rush has sadly reignited this week, as HTC has announced its second gold version of the HTC One. This time though, you won’t need to be an award-winning musician to get your hands on one. In the press release, HTC’s president of European operations said the new phone builds on, “The recent success of the HTC 18-carat gold MOBO phone.” Gold diggers will be disappointed though, as there’s not a hint of the real shiny stuff on this model.

The gold HTC One still has the same familiar aluminum body shell, but this time in a subtle golden hue, which is very similar to the champagne-style shade used on the gold Apple iPhone. It joins the standard black or silver HTC One models, along with the two special edition versions in blue and red.

Underneath the different colored body shell, it’s business as usual for the HTC One. The 4.7-inch screen still has its 1080p resolution, while the phone is driven by a quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor. The Android OS has been covered in the HTC Sense UI, along with BlinkFeed over the main home screen. The HTC One also has dual BoomSound speakers, and the UltraPixel camera.

The new HTC One joins the aforementioned gold iPhone 5S, plus Samsung’s gold Galaxy S4 as the highest profile golden smartphones released over the past few months. HTC hasn’t confirmed when the phone will be available, although initially it’s set to go on sale in Europe through as-yet unnamed networks. The official blurb does mention the gold color makes the phone ideal for the, “Festive season and a must-have for starting 2014 in style,” so we doubt it’ll be long before it’s in the shops.

The DJI Mavic 3 Classic top view in flight

The specter of a U.S. market ban is once again looming over DJI, the biggest drone camera maker in the world. “DJI is on a Defense Department list of Chinese military companies whose products the U.S. armed forces will be prohibited from purchasing in the future,” reports The New York Times.

The defense budget for 2024 mentions a possible ban on importing DJI camera gear for federal agencies and government-funded programs. In 2021, the U.S. Treasury Department put DJI on a list of companies suspected of having ties to the Chinese military and alleged complicity in the surveillance of a minority group, culminating in investment and export restrictions.
