Pirate Bay Looking to Buy Micronation

Sweden’s Pirate Bay, well-known in the so-called grey market and darknet communities as a host tracker for a wide variety of often illegally-uploaded digital content available via BitTorrent, seems to be getting tired of efforts made by authorities in Sweden, the United States, and other nations to shut down its services. So Pirate Bay is looking into skating free of international copyright laws by acquiring its own micronation—and at the moment, its sights appear set on Sealand.

Sealand is a self-proclaimed micronation in international waters off England’s east coast; it was originally a sea defense platform designed to defend England against air raids originating in Europe. The outpost was eventually abandoned by the British military, only to be occupied in 1967 by Roy Bates; British court decisions later determined the platform was effectively sovereign and outside British jurisdiction; thus, the micro-nation of Sealand was born. Sealand currently has is own flag, anthem, legal code, and currency.

Sealand is also apparently for sale, and The Pirate Bay has entered negotiations—and launched a donation drive—with an eye towards acquiring the nation. Although details are sketchy, by acquiring a country of its own, The Pirate Bay would literally be in a position to write its own intellectual property and copyright laws—presumably, there would be none—and make "a great place for everybody, with high-speed Internet access [..] and VIP accounts to The Pirate Bay." Sealand already has its own hosting company, Havenco, which claims to offer unparalleled security and independence."

Sealand’s "Prince Roy" apparently has been in declining health for the last several years, and a fire in June of 2006 has put new pressured on the community, possibly forcing the consideration of a sale.

The Pirate Bay notes that if negotiations with Sealand don’t bear fruit, they’ll consider purchasing a small island and declaring it a sovereign state. The Pirate Bay has also been in talks with Ladonia, a disputed micronation in/adjacent to southern Sweden created to protect three sculptures by Lars Vilks.
