Samsung’s new 200MP camera promises big improvements, but you might have to wait

What’s happened? The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra was the first device from the South Korean brand to use a 200MP camera sensor. Now, a new Samsung 200MP camera sensor for use on future flagship devices has been unveiled and promises to bring performance improvements.

  • The new Samsung 200MP camera sensor is smaller than its predecessors, measuring 1/1.56 inches, per a report from Sam Mobile.
  • Regardless of its size, Samsung promises that this sensor will improve video and image quality.
  • This sensor brings new technology like Dual Vertical Transfer Gate (D-VTG) and Front Deep Trench Isolation (FDTI).

Why is this important? A major aspect of competition for most smartphone brands is camera performance. A device’s software and camera sensors play vital roles in its camera performance. With this new sensor, Samsung is challenging the performance of other existing sensors from Sony and OmniVision.

  • The Deep Trench Isolation technology on the Samsung 200MP camera sensor helps improve autofocus and noise reduction.
  • Samsung says this new sensor brings a 150% increase in conversion gain and up to 40% improvement in noise reduction.
  • The ISOCELL HP5 on this new sensor has been tweaked to improve light reception at the pixel level using a high-precision microlens.
  • It also uses a High Transmittance Anti-refractive layer to reduce the reflection of light that gets into a pixel.
  • To ensure the reduction of interference and light loss, this sensor uses an oxide-based insulation structure.

Why should I care? Just like its predecessors, this new Samsung 200MP camera sensor will be used across various devices. One device that might use this sensor is the upcoming OPPO Find X9 Pro. For now, Samsung might not use this sensor on its flagship devices.

  • This new sensor offers 2x optical zoom capability.
  • It also comes with Smart ISO Pro and Staggered HDR for better HDR images and videos.
  • Images taken with this sensor can be captured in 8-bit, 10-bit, 12-bit, and 14-bit RAW files.
  • Regarding video capabilities, this sensor can record Full HD videos at 240fps, 4K videos at 120fps, and 8K videos at 30fps.

Okay, what’s next? The next wave of Android flagship devices are already being prepared for launch. These devices will go head-to-head with new flagship processors from Qualcomm and MediaTek. On the side of camera performance, the new Samsung 200MP camera sensor aims to lead the competition, pioneering next-level image and video capabilities.

  • Just like with its first 200MP sensor, which didn’t arrive on Samsung’s S22 Ultra and instead waited for the S23 Ultra, this new entry might not feature on the upcoming Galaxy S26 Ultra.
  • Instead, this could be the camera we see on the Galaxy S27 Ultra in 2027.
