Sony Planning PS3 Tuner, DVR Functionality?

Sony Planning PS3 Tuner, DVR Functionality?

In an interview with The Press in New Zealand, Sony marketing head Warwick Light apparently spilled the beans on some of Sony’s forthcoming plans for the PlayStation 3, saying the company plans to introduce a tuner and TV recording capabilities to the console. According to Light, the additions would come around the time the New Zealand’s Freeview terrerstrial digital TV service is due to launch in March 2008.

“We’re also hoping next year—about the same time that Freeview launches its terrestrial broadcasting service (expected to be in March)—to release a digital tuner for the PS3, turning it into a programmable TV recorder,” Light said in the interview.

Freeview plans to use the DVB-T and DVB-S standards to broadcast digital television and digital radio; the service is currently available in New Zealand via satellite. If Sony is planning on supporting Freeview in New Zealand, it would be logical to assume the company would support Freeview in the UK and other European nations. However, it does not necessarily follow that Sony would introduce analog or digital television tuners for the U.S. market. Industry watchers are looking to next month’s Leipzig Games Convention as a possible forum for an announcement; analysts are also anticipating a price cut on the Sony PlayStation 3 in Europe and other markets before the end-of-year holidays.

Sony is planning cross-generation gameplay between PS4 and PS5
PS5 PS4 cross generation gen gameplay online multiplayer the last of us

Sony is gearing up to reveal the PlayStation 5 (not the official name yet) but it looks like the company wants to make the transition to the platform to be a slow and deliberate one. PlayStation CEO and 25-year Sony vet Jim Ryan spoke with CNET and expressed that the plan is for cross-generational gameplay between the PS5 and PS4.

Sony has a massive PS4 user base and it makes sense for the company to do anything it can to transition those players over to PS5. Home consoles, unlike PC, have to start at zero with each generation of hardware. All of the success of the previous generation can help encourage new purchases but it's not an automatic ticket to cash in.

How to get to Monkey Island in Sea of Thieves
An election poster for guybrush in Sea of Thieves.

Over the course of its many years of updates and expansions, Sea of Thieves has had a few notable crossovers with other pirate franchises. The Pirates of the Caribbean crossover let you team up with the legendary Jack Sparrow, but the Monkey Island content felt like it came out of nowhere. For those unaware, Monkey Island is a series of pirate point-and-click games that were as funny as the puzzles were obscure. Thankfully, you don't have to intuit that you need to combine a cat whisker with a mason jar to bypass a skeleton guard to get to this new content, but it is more challenging than you might think.
