Check out our full written Sony Xperia Z1 Compact review.

Sony has made some pretty powerful phones, but they haven’t exactly made them friendly for smaller pockets. It’s flagship phone, the Xperia Z1, has an impressive spec sheet with a 5-inch screen, so Sony took the internals of the powerful phone and put it in a smaller, 4.3-inch body. That is the gist of the aptly named Sony Xperia Z1 Compact.

For such a small frame, the specs of the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact feel like a big deal. It’s powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor and is kept running by a 2,300mAh battery. Though it shrinks down in most aspects, it beefs up a little in thickness from the original Z1, measuring just a millimeter thicker. The Xperia Z1 has LTE and NFC capabilities and it sports the same impressive 20MP camera with f/2.0 G Lens and BIONZ processor that its bigger, older brother has.

The screen on the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact takes a little bit of a drop with it’s 720p resolution, but the IPS LCD display should improve viewing angles and make up for the pixel count shortcomings.

Sony promises the Xperia Z1 Compact will cost less than the Xperia Z1, meaning consumers can access the best aspects of Sony’s flagship phone without paying the premium for it. No official price or release date has been announced yet, though an international release is planned for next month.

Sony has had a rough history when it comes to smartphones. Last year, the company vowed to do away with its boxy design philosophy and adopt more modern sensibilities. But the tech landscape changes quickly, and those phones are already starting to look a little dated. At Mobile World Congress 2019, Sony unveiled three new phones it hopes will lead the company into the future, though whether Sony really has a future in the mobile business remains to be seen.

An iPhone on a colorful chair showing phone buttons.

If you’re planning to travel overseas and need to make a phone call back home, it’s important to figure out the best way to do so before you leave. While your cell phone provider can assist you, using its services out of network will probably result in additional charges. Instead, consider using international calling apps designed for iPhone or Android devices, such as the iPhone 15 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S24.

Typically powered by Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), these apps use an internet connection instead of traditional phone networks. While many of these apps do have a cost associated with them, others do not.
