Sony hints at Xperia Z2 successor for second half of 2014

Even though Sony recently unveiled its flagship smartphone, the Xperia Z2, expect its successor to arrive sooner rather than later. In an interview with Japanese site Watch Impress, Sony Mobile creative director Kurozumi Yoshiro revealed that the Xperia Z2 is the company’s flagship … for six months.

While companies typically adhere to the year-long product cycle, Yoshiro throws it in the rearview mirror, saying that Sony will not abandon the six-month product cycle it started with the Xperia Z. According to Yoshiro, in order to maintain the flagship status of its product, Sony must upgrade it at a faster clip in order to compete with the latest and greatest from other manufacturers.

“In order to maintain a flagship, you must update at this frequency,” said Yoshiro. As such, the Xperia Z2 will be Sony’s flagship handset for “the first half of 2014.”

However, there is a chance we will see a different look than the OmniBalance design we’ve seen on the Xperia Z line. Regardless of whether the follow-up to the Xperia Z2 will have a new design or not, introducing a flagship in the same year as the previous one was announced will undoubtedly frustrate Xperia Z2 customers.
