Gumpert Sportwagenmanufaktur – I wish I were making that name up … thanks, Germany! – is back.
There was a short time when it looked as is the small-scale supercar maker would go under, even though it sported one of the fastest cars in the world.
Now, though, with a new infusion of much-needed greenbacks, Gumpert is ready to push some new models into limited production.
Last week at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, Gumpert unveiled a new car called the Explosion. While we’re not so sure the name bodes well for its reliability, we’re quite glad to see Gumpert return.
Now news has come from Autovisie that Gumpert will be sending a production version of its Tornante concept (pictured above) into the hands of select buyers in 2015. How do you become a select buyer? You tell Gumpert you want one … and then pay money. Simple stuff, really.
What’s not so simple, though, is the Tornante’s lineage. It’ll be based upon the previous Gumpert model called the Apollo, which, in 2009, rounded the Nurburgring in 7:11.57.
The concept version of the Tornante featured a twin-turbocharged V8 producing 700 horsepower and 663 pound-feet of torque. We wouldn’t be surprised if the production version were faster than the Apollo, as technology has advanced quite a bit since 2011. Plus, Gumpert is German, so it also has access to German magic. So that’ll help.
