Swedish supercar maker Koenigsegg to open first U.S. dealer in New York

It’s hard to believe the extreme supercars of Swedish builder Koenigsegg are sold through mere dealerships. With the sort of power and engineering underneath the skin of every Koenigsegg, one might think you’d have to ask the blessing of Odin before you can buy one.

Despite Koenigsegg’s otherworldly performance, someone has to take on the task of selling these beauties. Koenigsegg will open its first U.S. dealership in New York later this year, and may open other stores in the future.

Koenigseggs will be sold by Manhattan Motorcars, an exotic-car dealer that already peddles the wares of Porsche, Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Spyker, and Bugatti.

So these Swedish supercars will be in good company, even if they’re being sold in one of the most hostile environments imaginable for a car.

To promote its U.S. launch, Koenigsegg will display an Agera R at the 2014 New York Auto Show next month. It’s probably better off perched on a show stand than mixing it up with the taxis and CitiBikes in Manhattan’s notorious traffic.

The Agera R is powered by a 5.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V8, which produces 1,140 horsepower and 885 pound-feet of torque. Koenigsegg says it will do 0 to 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds, and 0 to 186 mph in 21.6 seconds.

While it’s not the most stylish supercar around, the Agera R definitely looks the part, and its body is made of lightweight aluminum and carbon fiber. It’s also got nifty double-hinged doors, which are both cool and practical.

It’s hard to imagine such a machine getting overshadowed, but that’s exactly what happened when Koenigsegg unleashed the One:1 at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.

This hardcore version of the Agera R is named for its power-to-weight ratio of one horsepower kilogram. That means 1,340 hp in a car that tips the scales at 1,340 kg (about 2,954 pounds). It should be a bit more lively than Keanu Reeves.

Koenigsegg hasn’t said whether the One:1 will be sold in the U.S., but the company’s first Stateside showroom will open later this year.

Sure, the R2 isn't cheap -- but it's a whole lot cheaper than most other EVs out there, especially when it comes to SUVs. But Rivian isn't the only company trying to tackle the problem of the budget electric SUV. The Kia EV9 is finally available, and it too offers a modern design and a range of helpful features.

Given the fact that the Rivian R2 and Kia EV9 are two electric SUVs in a similar price range, you might be wondering which is better for your needs. That's why we put the Rivian R2 and the Kia EV9 head-to-head.
Design
Both the Rivian R2 and the Kia EV9 are actual SUVs -- not crossovers pretending to be SUVs, like plenty of other EVs out there. The two vehicles offer big, boxy designs and plenty of interior space, making them excellent options for families or those who need that extra storage.

Rivian R2 vs R1S: How will Rivian’s cheaper SUV compare?
The front three-quarter view of a 2022 Rivian against a rocky backdrop.

Rivian has finally unveiled the R2, its long-awaited attempt at a more affordable electric SUV. The new vehicle may not be available just yet, but fans of Rivian's design aesthetics and feature set are already looking forward to being able to order the new car. The R2 is targeted at being a more affordable take on the electric SUV and will sit alongside the flagship-tier R1S.

Let's get this out of the way right now: The R1S is most likely going to be a better vehicle than the R2. Rivian isn't replacing the R1S with the R2 — it's releasing the R2 as a more affordable alternative, and there will be some compromises when buying the R2 over the R1S.
