Future of fourth-gen Ford Focus RS shaky, as worries of Mustang cannibalism rise

Back in February, we had learned that an all-new, fourth-gen Ford Focus RS could be coming to market in 2015. Now, though, that doesn’t seem so clear.

“There’s nothing to talk about,” said Stephen Odell, Ford’s European head told Autocar. “It’s great that we have a proud past with RS, and it’s clear it has acted as a halo product and a way of linking to our racing programs, but for now there is nothing to say.”

As sad as this is, it makes sense.

Ford is on a big push to sell every one of its models globally. This means that most markets will see the new Focus ST as well as the 2015 Mustang. If the Focus RS were to follow, it might well cannibalize some of those sales, as it would be powered by the Mustang’s mid-range 305-horsepower 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder.

We won’t give up hope, though.

While I liked the Focus ST fine, I felt like there was room for improvement. I want the power of the 2015 Mustang but the versatility of the Focus. We’ll be following this story closely, so check back often for updates.

Remember, just because Ford doesn’t have anything to say on the topic doesn’t mean the Focus RS is dead. It might well indicate the opposite.

The front three-quarter view of a 2022 Rivian against a rocky backdrop.

Rivian has finally unveiled the R2, its long-awaited attempt at a more affordable electric SUV. The new vehicle may not be available just yet, but fans of Rivian's design aesthetics and feature set are already looking forward to being able to order the new car. The R2 is targeted at being a more affordable take on the electric SUV and will sit alongside the flagship-tier R1S.

Let's get this out of the way right now: The R1S is most likely going to be a better vehicle than the R2. Rivian isn't replacing the R1S with the R2 — it's releasing the R2 as a more affordable alternative, and there will be some compromises when buying the R2 over the R1S.

Don’t let the gimmicks fool you. The Ioniq 5 N is a serious track car
2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N drifting.

We’re finally getting to the fun part of automakers’ methodical quest to replicate their lineups with electric cars.

Performance versions of ordinary cars have been a staple of the auto industry for decades. But while we’ve already seen some variants of EVs boasting more power and more impressive stats — think Tesla Model S Plaid or Lucid Air Sapphire — the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is the first to truly apply that format to an EV.
