Apple Wallet now lets you carry passports as a Digital ID

By merging biometric security with encrypted ID storage, Apple's digital identity ecosystem could soon replace physical IDs across airports, apps, and businesses.

What’s happened? Apple has launched Digital ID (beta) in Apple Wallet, allowing U.S. users to store passport-based IDs on their iPhones and Apple Watches securely.

Users can now present their Digital ID at over 250 TSA checkpoints across domestic airports for identity verification (via official newsroom post).
The setup process involves scanning the photo page and chip of a physical passport, uploading a selfie, and performing facial or head movements for added security.
When needed, users can access their Digital ID by double-clicking the side or home button, selecting their Digital ID, and authenticating with Face ID or Touch ID.
Apple states that the entire process is fully encrypted.

Why is this important? This feature builds on Apple’s existing capability to add driver’s licenses or state IDs to Wallet.

It leverages the security, privacy, and biometric authentication built into Apple devices, reducing dependency on physical IDs.
Given the number of iPhone users in the U.S., this rollout could pave the way for a broader shift toward digital-first government ID verification.
In essence, Apple Wallet is becoming an actual digital wallet, capable of storing both payment methods and identity credentials.

Why should I care? The Digital ID feature in Apple Wallet provides fast, reliable, and contactless identity verification through the familiar iPhone interface.

You no longer need to carry physical passports or licenses for domestic travel, reducing the risk of loss or theft.
To use the feature, you must have an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26.1, or an Apple Watch Series 6 or later running watchOS 26.1.
Your device’s region must be set to the U.S, and two-factor authentication must be enabled for your Apple account.

OK, what’s next? In the future, Apple Wallet users will be able to present their Digital ID at select businesses and organizations for age or identity verification, whether in person, in apps, or online.

This could allow users to purchase age-restricted products or log in to websites that require verification, without needing a physical ID.
Apple could expand its integration APIs and security features, working with both the government and the private sector to broaden adoption.
However, travelers will still need to carry physical IDs for international travel.

Google’s next flagship phones may ask buyers to accept two changes that rarely sit well together: smaller batteries and higher starting prices.
