Samsung Takes on Flip with HMX-U10 Compact Camcorder

It’s not secret that a portion of the YouTube generation has fallen in love with easy-to-use, Internet-savvy camcorders like the Flip HD that make it easy to shoot video and quickly pop it up onto social networking sites. Now Samsung has decided to get in on the act with the HMX-U10 full HD compact camcorder, designed with the point-and-shoot consumer in mind. the U10 can shoot full HD video at 1,920 by 1,080 resolution as well as shoot 10 megapixel still images, and a built-in Intelli-Studio application enables basic video editing and one-touch uploads to YouTube.

“The addition of the HMX-U10 adds strength to an already impressive line-up of Samsung camcorders and offers a digital video recording solution for everyone” said Samsung Digital Imaging’s marketing general manager Steve Mitchell, in a statement.

The U10 features a 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor and a 2-inch LCD display; the camera records video and images to SDHC media, and features Samsung’s Active Angle Lens that’s tilted at an angle of seven degrees, which Samsung claims is easier on a videographer’s wrist and arm. The U10 also features Samsung’s integrated Intelli-Studio application that lets users perform basic video editing without connecting a a PC; users can also play and edit their video by connecting to any PC without having to install any supporting software. Intelli-Studio also gives users a one-touch option to upload to YouTube.

Samsung says the U10 should be available in the UK in September 2009; Samsung didn’t announce any pricing information, but industry reports have the unit’s suggested retail price around $200 USD.
