Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro Max still can’t quit Qualcomm in the US

Apple has spent years trying to reduce its technology dependence. The C2 modem is a perfect example of this. But it seems like the company still can’t reduce its dependency on Qualcomm. A teardown from TechInsights confirms that the US iPhone 18 Pro Max uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X80 5G modem, rather than Apple’s new in-house C2. The company found the SDX80M modem alongside Qualcomm’s SDR875 RF transceiver inside the US model A3473.

Apple’s C2 is everywhere else

The smaller iPhone 18 Pro uses Apple’s C2 worldwide, as does the new iPhone Duo. The iPhone 18 Pro Max also gets C2 outside the United States. Apple’s US specifications conspicuously list C2 beneath the regular Pro while omitting any modem name for the Pro Max; Apple’s Indian specs explicitly list C2 for both sizes.

The Snapdragon X80 also isn’t new to Apple. Both iPhone 17 Pro models used the X80 globally last year. What is new inside this US Pro Max is an Apple-designed mmWave antenna module identified by TechInsights.

Why is the US Pro Max different?

We still don’t have an official explanation behind this discrepancy. One possibility raised by MacRumors is contractual. Qualcomm announced in 2023 that it would continue supplying smartphone modems to Apple through 2026, so keeping the X80 in one high-volume US model could potentially help Apple satisfy remaining commitments. This is still just speculation, though, so take it with a grain of salt.

It also doesn’t appear to be because C2 lacks the necessary US network support. Apple claims that the new modem now supports mmWave 5G, delivers meaningfully faster uploads than C1X, and consumes 15% less energy.

A tiny smartphone gadget can detect some of the nastiest chemicals in your water
Scientists built a tiny smartphone gadget that can spot toxic 'forever chemicals'
Smartphone-connected drinking water safety sensor Featured

What if checking your drinking water for dangerous chemicals were as simple as plugging a tiny gadget into your smartphone? Researchers in Japan have developed a compact sensor that could make that possible, potentially bringing sophisticated water contamination testing out of expensive laboratories and into people's hands.

Scientists at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) have created a portable device capable of detecting extremely low concentrations of PFAS, commonly known as "forever chemicals." The findings were published in the journal Biosensors and Bioelectronics, which demonstrate how an inexpensive sensor and a smartphone could make identifying potentially harmful chemicals in water a lot easier.

ShiftCam ProRig+ wants to turn the iPhone into a filmmaking beast
ShiftCam launches ProRig+ on Kickstarter with advanced camera controls for iPhone creators
ShiftCam ProRig+

ShiftCam is adding to its range of iPhone filmmaking accessories with ProRig+, a revised version of its modular camera rig that has dedicated controls for focus, zoom, shutter, and shooting modes. The new system launches on Kickstarter with the ProControl remote, giving mobile creators a higher level of hands-on control without having to constantly tap their iPhone’s screen.

The announcement comes soon after ShiftCam introduced the original ProRig, developed with feedback from Apple. The original model is expected to ship in the coming weeks, while ProRig+ will be a more advanced remote and will be delivered to backers in February 2027. The Kickstarter campaign has also been honored with the platform’s “Projects We Love” designation.

Samsung might have a Galaxy Z Fold 9 for everyone, and I’m losing count
Samsung's 2027 foldable lineup is getting packed
Electronics, Speaker, Mobile Phone

Samsung's foldable lineup could be getting pretty crowded next year. We're already expecting successors to the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and the Galaxy Z Flip 8, while fresh leaks hint that several more devices could be in the pipeline.

The expanded lineup might include a bigger fold, a potentially cheaper alternative, and even something that slides rather than folds. According to a new leak, Samsung is currently testing two different versions of an additional wide-format Galaxy Z Fold 9. That's not all, Samsung's foldable plans could feature a grand total of six models, which is kind of in line with earlier reports.
