Evolve and No Man’s Sky lead the Best of E3 2014 winners

The votes have been cast and counted, and Evolve is the big winner coming out of E3 2014. The small panel of voters — which now includes Digital Trends, as of 2014 — was impressed enough with Turtle Rock Studios’ sharp asymmetrical multiplayer game to name it Best of Show. The 2K-published game nabbed four awards in all, including Best Console Game, Best Action Game, and Best Online Multiplayer.

Hello Games’ No Man’s Sky lagged behind with three wins, for Best Original Game, Best Independent Game, and a Special Commendation for Innovation. The PC/PlayStation 4 game, from Joe Danger developer Hello Games, sends players off to explore a massive, multiplayer galaxy filled with randomly generated planets and flora/fauna. It generated a lot of excitement in its 2013 premiere at the VGX awards show, and that excitement carried all the way through to E3’s PlayStation 4 announcement.

None of the other games generated enough votes to win in more than one category, but fan favorites Super Smash Bros., Batman: Arkham Knight, and Dragon Age: Inquisition all managed to nab awards. One notable absence from the winner circle is Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. Despite lots of buzz around the Monolith Productions game going into E3 and the ample amount of hands-on time publisher WBIE offered up, it wasn’t enough to best Dragon Age in the RPG category. Keep an eye on Mordor though; that game does some special things, and it’s a surefire sleeper hit (if nothing else) for 2014.

Well… at least God of War Laufey is getting a physical disc

Last week, Sony lit the gaming community on fire by announcing that all new PlayStation games released from January 2028 onwards would be digital-only, effectively bringing an end to physical discs for future releases. At the same time, the company also confirmed it would shut down the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita digital stores by July 2027, reinforcing concerns that digital storefronts and the games tied to them don't last forever. Unsurprisingly, the announcements triggered widespread backlash from collectors and long-time PlayStation fans. In the middle of all that, Santa Monica Studio offered a surprisingly comforting update: God of War Laufey will be available on disc. It's only one sentence, but it says a lot.

Razer has leaned heavily into that identity for this headset, replacing the usual kitty look with Cinnamoroll’s floppy ears and a sky-blue color scheme.
