Toshiba’s Encore 2 Write blends Windows with Wacom

Toshiba has a fresh new Windows tablet to show us at CES 2015. It’s the Encore 2 Write, and it comes with either an 8-inch, or a larger 10.1-inch touchscreen. As you may have guessed from its name, the Encore 2 Write has an included stylus that uses Wacom’s Feel digital pen technology to provide the accuracy and precision usually associated with traditional pen and paper.

Windows 8.1 is installed on the tablet, and the package includes one-year’s access to Office 365 Personal, plus a set of apps which make use of the stylus (called a TruPen) and some of the tablet’s other features. Toshiba’s note-taking app called TruNote can be used to take notes, or annotate existing files, including photos.

Sticking with the Tru theme, there’s also TruRecorder — an app for recording speeches and meetings — aimed at the business user, and TruCapture, which uses the Encore 2 Write’s camera to capture images from textbooks and presentations, then enhances them for use with TruNote.

Toshiba has fitted an 8-megapixel camera to the back of the Encore 2 Write, and there’s a basic webcam above the screen for HD video calls. An Intel Atom processor with 2GB of RAM provides the power, and there’s a generous 64GB of storage space, plus a MicroSD card slot to expand it further.

Other features include a Micro HDMI port, Micro USB port, and a battery which should provide around 11 hours of use before needing a recharge. We’re waiting for confirmation of the screen resolution, and will update here when we’ve seen the Encore 2 Write at CES. Toshiba will release the tablet through Microsoft’s and its own online stores on January 11, when the 8-inch model will set you back $350, and the 10.1-inch version slightly more at $400.
