Mercedes-AMG is racing into the Detroit Motor Show with the GLE63 S Coupe, a hot-rodded variant of the recently-unveiled GLE-Class that is aimed squarely at the BMW X6 M.
Mercedes’ newest AMG-massaged model packs a 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that generates 577 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 561 foot-pounds of torque from 1,750 to 5,250 rpm. The behemoth rockets from zero to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds.
Hand-built, the eight-cylinder spins all four wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission that can be manually controlled using shift paddles. The gearbox offers five modes called Slippery, Comfort, Individual, Sport and Sport Plus, respectively. Each one delivers a different driving experience by modifying the engine’s response, the transmissions’ shift points, the suspension’s firmness and how often the traction control kicks in.
The V8’s power is kept in check by a high-performance braking system with ventilated and perforated discs all around, while a more responsive steering rack with a variable ratio lets the driver make the most of the GLE63’s grunt.
The GLE63 stands out from the stock GLE Coupe thanks to a new front bumper with three large air ducts and a discreet splitter, a twin-slat radiator grille with mesh inserts, a powerdome hood and an AMG-specific rear bumper with an air diffuser and four exhaust pipes.
The sporty treatment continues inside with a more compact three-spoke flat-bottomed steering wheel, stainless steel pedals, black Nappa leather upholstery on the dashboard, sport seats for the front passengers and a 200-mph speedometer with red pointers.
Buyers can spruce up the GLE63 by choosing from a long list of options that includes a performance exhaust system, 22-inch alloy wheels, a carbon fiber engine cover and a high-end surround sound system.
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE63 AMG S Coupe will land on dealer lots in a couple of months.
