Samsung has announced the debut of its new SSD solution for workstations and ultra-slim laptops, the SM951.

By utilizing the new PCIe 3.0 slot installed on recently introduced laptops and desktops, Samsung says it has been able to achieve an astounding 2,150 megabytes per second read, and 1,550MB/s write, which simply trounces the competition available today.

“We are helping to accelerate growth of the ultra-slim notebook PC market with the introduction of this energy-efficient, high-speed PCIe SSD,” said Jeeho Baek, Senior Vice President of Memory Marketing at Samsung Electronics.

PCI SSD solutions are certainly nothing new, but it’s only recently that they’ve started to see the kind of widespread adoption experienced by its predecessor, SATA.

The SM951 isn’t just quick either; it barely sucks up any power, too. The drive will incorporate the new L1.2 low power standby mode, which lets the slot be fully shut off whenever the computer is sent into hibernation.

The company claims the drive will also be compatible with the older PCIe 2.0 standard, and will achieve only slightly slower results with 1,600MB/s read, and 1,350MB/s write.

It’s clear that Samsung is using what they’ve got to work with to their advantage, and the company says we’ll soon see the SM951 in 128GB, 256Gb, and 512GB configurations.

With the 17.3-inch display of the HP Laptop 17t, you'll have a lot of screen real estate to work on your projects and watch streaming shows.
