If you were hoping that April would be the month that AMD would finally make it possible for you to bring your multiple CrossFire graphics cards to bear on your FreeSync monitor set up, then tough luck, as the chip giant has pushed back the driver update for now. There is also no word on when multiple monitors will be supported by the frame rate syncing technology either.
Although it was initially announced that AMD would release both updates sometime in April, that month has come and gone and there’s no sign of either. Fans were understandably a bit put out by this, so AMD shoved a spokesperson front and centre to explain what’s going on.
“AMD fans have been outspoken about their love for the smooth gameplay of AMD FreeSync technology, and have understandably been excited about the prospect of using compatible monitors with the incredible performance of an AMD CrossFire configuration,” they said on the official forum, hoping to sugar coat the sour news.
“After vigorous QA testing, however, it’s now clear to us that support for AMD FreeSync™ monitors on a multi-GPU system is not quite ready for release.”
They went on to say that the Catalyst driver update was delayed for now, but AMD will continue testing and developing it. There was no announcement of a revised release date, however, or even an indicator for when it would be available.
As much as this is sad news for gamers hoping to take advantage of their FreeSync displays with multiple graphics cards or monitor set ups, this is also a blow for AMD’s FreeSync technology as a whole. Even though Nvidia’s rival G-Sync technology is more expensive, it has been proven capable of handling multiple display set-ups and multiple GPUs without much difficulty.
No doubt this news will see at least some people driven into Nvidia’s waiting arms.
