More Batgirl, less Batman: First Arkham Knight DLC arrives July 14

Batman: Arkham Knight has only been out for a little more than a week, but it’s already a strong contender for game of the year. As the definitive end to Rocksteady’s Arkham trilogy, new content taking place after the events of the game would undermine the sense of finality. Instead, we’re going back in time with Arkham Knight‘s first DLC, Batgirl: A Matter of Family, when it arrives July 14.

Spoiler alert for those unfamiliar with Batman backstory! “Set prior to the events of Arkham Asylum, Batgirl: A Matter of Family will allow players to take on the role of Batgirl for the first time in the Batman: Arkham franchise,” Warner Brothers states in the official release. Of course, although Batgirl is not seen in Rocksteady’s trilogy, she is still there, albeit under a different name, Oracle, and plays a huge role in helping Batman take down his rogues gallery.

Like Arkham Knight proper, the new DLC will include side quests and Dual Play with Robin, allowing you to switch between Batgirl and Batman’s trusty sidekick on the fly. A “new hacking feature” also allows for new ways to solve puzzles. One can only hope that it will be substantially longer than the Harley Quinn and Red Hood missions included as free bonuses, which combined take roughly 45 minutes to complete.

Batgirl: A Matter of Family was developed by WB Montreal, the developer behind Batman: Arkham Origins. However, future season pass content is being developed by Rocksteady, and will release over the next six months. This content includes The Season of Infamy, Gotham City Stories, new “legendary Batmobiles,” challenge maps, and character skins, and will set you back $40. Batgirl: A Matter of Family will be available to purchase for those without a season pass on July 21.
