You have to hand it to Ryan Reynolds and the Deadpool team. They’ve even found a way to give the polarizing promotional strategy of releasing trailer previews — essentially, trailers for trailers — a clever twist.
With the red-band (that means “R”-rated) trailer for Deadpool set to debut tonight (August 4) on Conan O’Brien’s late-night talk show Conan, Reynolds suited up as his mutant mercenary alter ego for a brief segment teasing the trailer’s premiere. Rather than following the lead of other studios and simply providing an early look at a few clips from the trailer (which, of course, is just providing an early look at a few clips from the movie), the Deadpool “trailer trailer” features the film’s titular mercenary relaxing on a leather chair while classic movie-trailer narration sets the tone.
“In a world divided by fear, one man must stand alone against the forces of darkness,” Reynolds can be heard saying in his best impression of Don LaFontaine. “From the studio that inexplicably sewed his f—ing mouth shut the first time, comes five-time Academy Award viewer Ryan Reynolds as a man with an eHarmony date with destiny …”
Promising to “blow out your collective sphincters,” the new, red-band Deadpool trailer premieres on Conan tonight at 11pm ET on TBS.
Directed by Tim Miller, Deadpool casts Reynolds as former Special Forces operative Wade Wilson, who gains accelerated healing powers after being subjected to a military experiment that nearly kills him. Now a mutant mercenary, he sets out to find the man who almost destroyed his life.
Along with Reynolds, the film stars T.J. Miller as Weasel, Gina Carano as Angel Dust, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Morena Baccarin as Copycat, and Ed Skrein as Ajax. Zombieland screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick penned the script for the film.
Deadpool hits theaters February 12, 2016.
