Out of traction and back in action: Tracy Morgan to return to comedy with FXX series

Tracy Morgan’s comeback speech at last night’s Primetime Emmy Awards (embedded above) was an inspiring and memorable moment and it looks like the comedian is using it as a springboard to get his career and life back on track following the severe injuries he sustained in a car crash last June.

In August, news broke that Morgan would be returning to Saturday Night Live on October 17, 2015 to take part in the show’s 41st season and then, during a recent Q&A with The Hollywood Reporter, the funnyman confirmed that he would be moving forward with the untitled FXX series announced just before his tragic crash.

The network originally ordered ten half-hour episodes, but the show was tabled while its lead actor recovered from the life-threatening injuries that kept him in a coma for eight days after the accident. When asked about the state of the project, Morgan emphatically stated “We will do it. As long as I got a breath in my body, we will do it. I will conspire to make [people] laugh forever”

Developed by Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton and Luvh Rakhe (the team that brought you It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), details on the project are still scarce. Morgan didn’t offer anything in the way of specifics during the interview and was careful to reiterate that he isn’t rushing anything in terms of his recovery. “One thing at time, one thing at a time. I don’t want to be overwhelmed with things. I’ve had a long year, and I don’t want to be overwhelmed” he said.

Morgan was involved in a fatal six-vehicle crash on the New Jersey Turnpike last June, during which he sustained a broken femur, broken nose, several broken ribs and a traumatic brain injury that left him comatose for over a week. Comedian James McNair, a friend and colleague of Morgan’s, was killed during the accident.

We’re excited to have Morgan back in the world of comedy but, like everyone else, we’re more thrilled to see the progress he has made on his long road to recovery.

While straight action films like John Wick are far from extinct, it's the action comedies that tend to become the popular box office hits. Movie fans just love to laugh at the funny parts while enjoying the accompanying action. It's a new month, and that means new movies on Hulu. And somebody over there really loves Tom Hanks. Because in this month alone, Hulu is adding Hanks' directorial debut, That Thing You Do, one of his most iconic films, Big, and one of his most recent hits, Elvis. But if we had to choose only one Hulu movie to stream in May 2024, then our pick is another Tom Hanks movie: Cast Away.

Robert Zemeckis directed the film from a script by William Broyles Jr. It cast Hanks as Chuck Noland, a FedEx employee who survives a plane crash in the Pacific ocean, only to find himself stranded on an island in the middle of nowhere without anyone to turn to but himself. Cast Away was actually a big hit in late 2000 and during the early part of 2001, earning $429.6 million worldwide. That may not have translated into Oscar gold for two-time Best Actor winner Hanks, but Cast Away is an unforgettable film that deserves a new audience nearly 24 years after it hit theaters.
