Microsoft is to open its first two data centres in the U.K. as part of the company’s growing network of data centers outside of the U.S. The announcement means that Microsoft will be able to bid for U.K. and local government cloud computing contracts in the future.

Locating the Azure data centers in the U.K. will also speed up services for U.K. and European clients, said CEO Satya Nadella at the announcement in London today. Microsoft already counts British supermarket giant Tesco and retailer Marks & Spencer among its client base.

One data center will be opened near London in 2016 while the other location has yet to be determined. Elsewhere, the company recently completed expansions on its data centers in Ireland and the Netherlands.

Microsoft is one of the companies affected by the recent striking down of Safe Harbor, which has brought the integrity and protection of European data by U.S. firms under scrutiny. One of the remedies tabled by many is for tech giants to store more data within European borders.

“Having these two local Azure regions means we can say this data will never leave the UK, and will be governed by all of the local regulations and laws,” Scott Guthrie, executive vice president of Microsoft Cloud and Enterprise, told BBC News. This, he added, was especially important for handling data like that from defense forces or healthcare.

Microsoft legal chief Brad Smith, in the aftermath of the Safe Harbor’s dismantling, stated that U.S. firms should be compliant with European laws.

Amazon has also eyed the U.K. for more data centers. Last week it announced that it was opening a new AWS data center in the country as well to service clients like the BBC and the U.K.’s national railway service.

The announcements fit into a growing trend of tech giants building data centers outside of the U.S. During the summer, Microsoft announced two new data centers in Canada while Facebook, Amazon, and Apple are all planning on building new facilities in Ireland.

Start today: Save with Dell and shape a more sustainable future for us all
Dell Sustainable Future for Earth Day featured image

Earth Day may be over, but sustainability and eco-initiatives cannot be relegated to a single day, week, or month. To make any impact in today's hyperconnected and tech-centric world, they must be sustained long-term via thoughtful, engaging actions. For example, e-waste or electronic waste from old, dysfunctional, or discarded electronics is a considerable concern. Every year, millions of electronic devices or products are discarded and thrown away in landfills, many of which have hazardous or harmful materials inside that can poison the ground soil, water sources, and nearby communities. It's essential to not only intelligently dispose of these old devices but also find new ways to reuse and repurpose them so that the materials don't go to waste, let alone harm local communities.

We can all contribute to creating a more responsible, sustainable future by making the right choices, and Dell is making that possible. Thanks to advanced technology offers on PCs and accessories that are meant to help reduce e-waste. Dell has adopted the mantra “repurpose, reuse, and rethink” for a good reason. Many featured products are purposefully built with recycled plastics, shipped in renewable packaging and materials, and ultimately meant to help cut down on society's collective wastefulness so you can save big and feel good about it all.
